Clarence Owen Foss
27 April 1940 - 31 May 1962
Clarence Owen Foss, 22 years old, of Galena, Kan., an employe of the Doane Feed Products Company on West Twentieth street road, was suffocated when feed in a large tank caved in while he was working inside the tank Thursday morning.
Deputy Sheriff Gene Copeland, who investigated with Jasper county Coroner Dr. Wendell Fuhr, said the body was discovered by fellow workers about 10:30 o'clock. The coroner ruled the death accidental and said there will be no inquest.
Copeland said there were no witnesses to the accident, but it is believed Foss had climbed into the tank to clear dry powdered feed from the sides to open a chute and the feed caved in.
Dr. Fuhr said time of the accident was believed to have been about 9:30 o'clock.
According to a company spokesman, Foss was engaged in shifting the grain from one tank to another when the accident occurred. He had been employed at the plant since 1959.
The body was recovered by Galena firemen and was removed to the Derfelt funeral home at Galena.
Mr. Foss moved from El Paso to Galena in 1950 with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Foss, presently of 1004 Euclid street. He attended Galena schools and was graduated in 1958 from Galena high school.
