Mary Catherine Atkinson, 54, 1120 Murphy Ave., died at 3:41 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
Mrs. Atkinson was born Aug. 9, 1938, at Galena, Kan., and was a lifelong resident of the Galena-Joplin area. She was a 1957 graduate of Galena High School and was a homemaker.
She married Gary Atkinson on June 19, 1957, at Joplin. He survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Miksell and Heather Atkinson, both of Joplin, and Pamela Bannister, Memphis, Tenn.; her father, Charles P. Shryock, Joplin; a brother, Charles W. Shryock, Joplin; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. The Rev. Bob Johnson will officiate.
Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Shryock, Mark Shryock, Craig Shryock, Jason Summers, Hank Bannister and John Plagmann.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

GALENA, KANSAS: Gary E. Roy, age 72, 1909 S Main St, died at 9:40 am, Sunday, February 6, 2011 at his home with his family by his side.
Gary was born November 24, 1938 in Galena, KS. His parents were Beauford Aron and Louise (Frazier) Roy.
He was a lifetime resident of Galena.
He served 6 years in the US Army Reserves stationed out of Ft Leonard Wood, MO.
He had worked a total of 26 years at Doanes Products, retiring in 2001 as a shipping supervisor.
Gary was a member of Tennessee Prairie Church, Galena, KS.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and was his grandchildren's greatest fan.
He was married to Jackie C. Curl on May 11, 1957 in Columbus, KS. She survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Scotty Roy; 3 daughters, Diana (Mrs. Leon) Wammack, Cindy Lou (Mrs. Shaine) Scott, and Cindy Marie (Mrs. Troy) Sturgis, all of Galena, KS one brother, Jim (and Donna Roy), Eagle Rock, MO; 4 sisters, Sally (Mrs., Jim) Hughes, Galena, KS, Barbara (Mrs. David) Qualls, Galena, KS, Rosetta (Mrs. Jerry) Allen, Baxter Springs, KS and Vicki (Mrs. Terry) Prier, Spring City, MO; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Gary and Jackie were considered parents to several children he considered his own.
He was preceded in death by three babies, Glea Ann, Randell Eugene, and Belinda Louise; and one sister, Mary Roberts.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Dave Robinson will officiate.
Burial will be in Lowell Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Brad Wammack, Shaine Curtis Scott, Trampas Williams, Jesse Roberts, Levi Sturgis, and Chad Shepherd. Honorary pallbearers will be Austin Sturgis, Ryley Williams, Levi Scott, Haden Wammack, Bryson Roberts and Colson Roberts.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, Feb 10, 2011 at the funeral home.

William D. Cagle, age 77 passed away at Golden Living Center, Pittsburg, KS following an illness.
William was born August 6, 1938 in Galena, KS.
His parents were Raymond and Verna (Martin) Cagle.
He had lived in Pittsburg for the past 2 years after spending most of his life in Galena.
He was a member of Galena Assembly of God.
Surviving is one sister, Rayma June Carlisle, Olathe, KS; two sisters-in-law Pat Minkler, Joplin, MO and Wanda Cagle, Riverton, KS; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home for cremation.
A memorial graveside service will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, Feb 16, 2016 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.
Pastor Jeff D Martin will officiate.

Ruth Margaret Ann Lapraik of Port Hueneme, Calif., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Dec. 12.
Ruth was born in Galena, Kan., in 1939 and graduated from Galena High School in 1957 and also attended Joplin Junior College for two years.
She later moved to California in the late 1960s and was a Ventura County resident for the past 23 years.
Ruth had a 25-year career in the insurance industry, specializing in commercial underwriting.
Ruth was a very special person who enjoyed corresponding with her friends and relatives via e-mails, letters and cards. Ruth always had a smile for everyone that she met and had a special way of brightening someone's day with her laughter and kindness. She was a loving wife and mother and cared deeply about all of her family and friends. She loved the ocean, the rain, lighthouses and especially decorating for Christmas. Ruth loved spending time with her family and friends and was known for baking her delicious pies and cakes. Ruth will be deeply missed by her family and friends and by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jack Lapraik; her son, Michael Lapraik; her brothers, Earl Neff of Missouri and Charles Neff of Palmdale; and her loving cat, Mollie.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, Dec. 20.

Ruth Margaret Ann Neff was the daughter of Emery Earl Neff Sr. and Annabelle Kreiger Neff. They later divorced.
Ruth grew up in Galena, KS, graduating with the class of 1957 from Galena High School.
She also leaves behind 2 brothers, Earl Neff, GHS'50 (wife, Sandra) Hermitage, MO, Charles Neff GHS'58 (wife, Carol) Palmdale, CA, and a half brother, Loren Neff (wife, Joan) New Jersey.
Ruth was predeceased by her father, Emery, Napa, CA, also, her mother, Annabelle Neff, her sister, Virginia (Neff) Baldwin GHS'49 and her brother, John Neff, GHS' 54, all formerly of Galena, KS.
Her mother, Annabelle and her brother, John are buried at Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, KS.
Her brother, Elmer Eugene "Gene" Neff, GHS'53, resident of Yuma, AZ, passed away Saturday, May 03, 2008 at Orange, CA.
Services were held in Santa Ana, CA with burial at the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA where their sister, Virginia (husband, Frank), and their father, Emery are also buried.

GALENA, Kan. — Barbara Jean Melton Hood, age 71, of Galena, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center following a short illness.
Barbara was born on Jan. 29, 1939, in Joplin, the daughter of Roy E. and Marie (Scarns) Melton. They preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death were her son, Wayne; half sister Ann Davis; and half brothers Doug Melton, Thomas Melton and Ricky Melton.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheri Lopez and husband Kevin; three grandchildren, Rebekah, Hannah and Christen, of Catonsville, Md.; a brother, Albert Melton, of Wyandotte, Okla.; half sisters Marie Maulding, Betty Turner and Debbie Melton; stepsister Sandy Fry; nieces Brenda Mallory, Melody Wellman, Shelley Abernathy, Cindy Downing and Vickey Martinez; and nephews R.J. Davis and Ronnie Davis.
Barbara moved to California in 1957, where she was employed by Eagle Picher, McDonald Douglas Aircraft and Knotts Berry Farm.
In 2002, she moved to Maryland and was a beloved Nana to her grandchildren.
She loved being involved with her church family of the First Presbyterian Church in Galena and spent many hours helping with church projects, Galena High School's class of 1957 reunion projects and was always available to lend a hand to a friend in need.
Barbara was much loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Cremation is being arranged by Mason-Woodard Mortuary, of Joplin.
A memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church of Galena will be announced at a later date.

A funeral will be at 10 am Saturday August 19, 2000, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Carolyn Eileen Woodall-Patterson who died on August 14, 2000 at the age of 60.
Carolyn was born December 12. 1939 in Galena, Kansas.
Her maiden name was Woodall.
She was raised in Galena, Kansas and attended school there. After graduation she attended Pittsburg College in Pittsburg, Kansas.
She later moved to California.
She was a homemaker who also worked in the Insurance and Construction industries. She co-owned Frame Northeast Construction Company in Clackamas, Oregon for four years.
She moved to Portland, Oregon in 1992 from Rialto, California.
She was married to Charles Patterson in 1960, he died in 1995.
Survivors include her sons, Mark Patterson of Portland, Oregon and Michael Patterson of Redlands,California, her father Everett Woodall and her step-mother Lucille Woodall of Joplin, Missouri, her sisters Sharon Allen-Thomas of Galena, Kansas and Marilyn Allen-Lauck of Joplin, Missouri.
Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carolyn was a 1957 graduate of Galena High School. She was Miss Galena in 1957. She attended PSU in Pittsburg, Kansas. She moved to California in 1960.
Her mother Jeanette DeGraff Allen passed away November 15, 1978.
Carolyn's stepfather Michael Porter Allen owned and operated Mike's Pool Hall in Galena. He passed away June 14, 1996.
The land was later donated by his daughter Sharon Allen Thomas to the city that became the Route 66 park between 5th & 6th, on West side of Main St. honoring Howard Litch. According to Sharon, since deceased, they were supposed to put a flag pole on the site honoring Mike Allen. Even though the ones who didn't honor the agreement are now deceased, the agreement could still be kept. Sharon was upset about this until she died.

Graveside services for Kenneth Myron Shaw, 59, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Green Acres Memorial Park in Bloomington.
He died Wednesday at his Fontana home. The cause of death is undetermined pending a doctor's report.
Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Ingold Chapel Funeral Home in Fontana.
Mr. Shaw, who was born in Kansas, lived in Fontana 41 years.
He worked at Kaiser Steel near Fontana for 25 years before he retired as a foreman.
He is survived by his wife, Trudy; a daughter, Lisa Brees of Riverside; a son, Freddie Titus of Fontana; three grandchildren; a brother, George of Rialto; and three sisters, Colleen Adams of Phoenix, Betty Gust of Springfield, Mo., and Kathy Swalley of Rialto.

Gertie Barber of Galena, aunt of Mrs. Peters, mother of Nancy Peters Starkey formerly of Galena received this notice of the death and burial of the Larry Starkey family on November 27, 1964.
Husband - Sp-4 Larry Eugene Starkey, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Starkey was born at Greeley, Colorado, November 29, 1939 and departed this life November 27, 1964 at approximately 7:30 p.m. near Barstow, Calif. He reached the age of 24 years, 11 months and 28 days.
Larry completed his elementary education in Galva, Kansas, and graduated from Gorham High School with the 1958 class. He was baptised at the First Methodist church of Galva. Later he became a member of the Gorham Community church of Gorham, Kansas. He attended and graduated from the U. S. Trade School at Kansas City, Missouri, in May of 1959.
Larry was employed in the Auto Body Shop in Norton and Russell, Kansas, before entering the service. He would have completed three years of Military Service, December 20, 1964.
Those mourning his passing are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Starkey, Russell, Kansas; a brother, Robert D. of Mesquite, Texas; a sister, Miss Kay Starkey of the home. Grandmother Mrs. Myrtle Clark of Fort Collins, Colorado; a grandfather, James Clark of Kersey, Colo. Also many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews. He will also be long remembered by his many friends and acquaintances.
Son - Jeffery Dean Starkey, son of Larry E. and Nancy C. Peters Starkey was born November 2, 1963 at Fort Irwin, California, and departed this life November 27 1964 at the age of 1 year and 25 days. He was a victim of the car-truck accident which took the lives of his parents.
He is survived by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Starkey, Russell, Kansas and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Peters of Almena, Kansas, also four uncles and three aunts.
Wife - Nancy Carol Peters Starkey was born April 15, 1939 in Joplin, Missouri. She departed this life on Saturday, November 28, 1964 at 8:05 p.m. at St. Bernadinas Hospital San Bernadino, Calif.
She attended Almena (sic) High School for three years graduating from Galena, Kansas High School in 1957.
Nancy joined the Baptist Church in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1959. She was employed as a stenographer for Wheaely Pump Co. of Tulsa, Oklahoma and later the Shields Oil Drilling Co., of Russell.
Mourning her passing are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ralph Peters, three brothers, Roger and Jerry of Olympia, Washington, and John of the home. Two sisters, Mrs. Sherri DeBusk, Joplin, Mo., and Ellen Peters of Manhatten, Kansas. A niece and nephew of Joplin, MO. A Grandmother, Mrs. Nellie Gardiner of Tulsa, Okla., two aunts and three uncles. She too had endeared herself to many friends and acquaintance.
Larry and Nancy were united in marriage at Russell, Kansas, on November 7, 1959. This union was blessed by the birth of a son, Jeffery Dean Starkey at Barstow, California, on November 2, 1963. Dean was taken by the same accident with his parents. Having reached the age of 1 year and 25 days. Dean was an only child, a pride and joy that arrived in the fourth year of their marriage.
The loveliness of life and person of our loved ones will be cherished forever.We thank God for the enrichment they brought to our lives.
Funeral services were held on December 3, 1964 in the First Congregational church at Russell, Kansas, with clergyman Rev. Edwin Mehlhaff officiating.
The music, "Now the Day Is Over." was furnished by soloist, Mrs. Fred Thompson, accompanied by Mrs. William Walters on the organ.

Triple funeral services for a Russell soldier and his wife and year-old son, who died of injuries received in an auto-semi-trailer collision about 7 p.m. Friday near Barstow, Calif., were held on Thursday at 2 p.m. from the First Congregational Church in Russell with Rev. Edwin Mehlhoff officiating.
Burial was in the Russell cemetery and was in charge of the Russell Mortuary.
The victims, Sp./4 Larry E. Starkey, 25, his wife Nancy, 25, and their year-old son, Jeffrey Dean, are the son, daughter-in-law and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Starkey of Russell, former Gorham residents. Larry was a member of the 1958 graduating class of Gorham Rural High School.
Sp./4 Starkey and his son were killed instantly, Mrs. Starkey, a former Pittsburg, Kan., resident, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Peters, Almena, Kan., never regained consciousness and died in a San Bernardino, Calif., hospital at 8:06 Saturday. She was born April 15, 1939.
Sp./4 Starkey was born Nov. 29, 1939, at Greeley, Colo. He was a member of the Gorham Community Church.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Starkey, Russell, one brother, Robert Donald Starkey, Masque, Tex., one sister, Kay Jean Starkey of the home and Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Peters of Almena, Kan. One of his sisters preceded him in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Starkey were notified of their deaths Saturday in a telegram sent by military authorities. The soldier had been stationed at Ft. Irwin, near Barstow.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church with Rev. Edmin Mehlhoff, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Fred L. Thompson was soloist and Mrs. William Walters organist.

Ronald and his wife JoAnn are the parents of three children, including Gods Warhorse President, Craig Reinolds. Ronald earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and spent his career as controller of two different North Carolina manufacturing companies. He also served as comptroller of a large church and Christian school in Jacksonville, Florida. As an accountant, he had the privilege of serving for more than forty years as a deacon and treasurer of the various churches he has attended. Having worked as a deacon over the years, he has developed a heart for Christian ministry.

Darrell Lee Goff, age 73 passed away at 8:35 am, Saturday, Jan 26, 2013 at his home following an illness.
Darrell was born October 13, 1939 in Galena, KS. His parents were Marvin and Bertha Barrett Goff. He was a lifetime resident of Galena.
Darrell was active in law enforcement in Cherokee County KS for many years. He served the county in several capacities including Deputy Sheriff, Under Sheriff, and Sheriff. He held some positions more than once. He retired from law enforcement in 2005 while serving as Chief of Police in Galena, KS.
He also worked at other jobs including used auto sales, farming, and operating Long's Trading Post, Baxter Springs, KS. He and his wife were Foster Parents caring for over 200 children.
He was a member of the Baxter Springs Saddle Club. He enjoyed caring for his livestock and was especially fond of raising horses. He also enjoyed repairing farm tractors.
Darrell was married to Betty Lee Leas on Dec 28, 1958 in Miami, OK. She survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Larry Goff, Galena, KS and Cody Rice, Riverton, KS; 5 daughters, Debbra (and Ricky) Bailey, Rockwall, TX, Linda (and Bayne) Wassom, Riverton, KS, Susie Kernel (and Chuck Goff) Galena, KS, April Prater, Joplin, MO, and Krista Rice, Riverton, KS; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents two brothers, Luther Goff and Bobby Goff, preceded him in death.

Wanda M. Youngblood, 74, Carthage, entered into rest on May 3, 2013 at her home following an illness.
She was born May 27, 1938 in Muscogee (sic) [Muskogee], OK to Leeland and Viola (Ingram) Baldwin.
Wanda was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and loved her flowers. She worked for Buddy L. Products in Neosho, was manager of J.D. Steak House, and numerous other restaurants. She also worked at Powers Museum in Carthage.

Ruth A. Peters, 62, Quapaw, died at 9:35 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Integris Baptist Regional Health Center, Miami, after an illness.
Peters was born March 16, 1939, in Galena, Kan., to James M. and Thelma (Noblit) Morland (sic) [Noblitt Moreland] . She lived in Galena, Kan., for 43 years before moving to Quapaw. She graduated from Galena High School in 1957.
She married Jerry Peters on May 22, 1965, in Galena. He survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Pam Jimerson and Tammy Lewis, both of Quapaw; two step children, Kathy Vanatta, Miami, and Herbert Peters, Michigan; her mother, Thelma Morland, Quapaw; two sisters, Deloris Webb and Idella Baldwin, both of California; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami, with the Rev. Ellen Herren officiating. Burial is in Mount Hope Cemetery, Afton.
Pallbearers are Ted Peruitt, Dallas Wall, Jim Bullard, Bill Widdell, Gary Sweden and Ron Ackinson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

GALENA, KANSAS: Gary E. Morey, age 74 passed away at 3:45 pm, Friday, August 24, 2012 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO.
Gary was born June 13, 1938 in Galena, KS. His parents were Lenard and Elsie Mae (Kimes) Morey.
He retired from the U S Navy after 20 years of service to this country. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He then continued to serve by working several years as a firefighter at San Clemente Island, CA.
One of his past times was coin collecting.
Surviving are two brothers; his twin Larry E. Morey, Vado NM, and Billy Dean Morey, Napavine, WA; and several nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his special friend, Doris Simpson, Galena, KS.
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, John Howard Morey, Richard Leon Morey, and Thomas Leonard Morey; and 5 sisters, Mildred May McCarthy, Hazel Fern Boudreaux, Mabel Irene McKibben, Betty Jean Morey, and Eva Lucile Morey.
Gary was taken for cremation under the care of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

She had 3 children by Wyrick, 1 child by Hughes, and one premature baby that died. I don't know who was father of baby that didn't live.
Ron Larson adopted all her children. They were married 12 years before divorcing. When he was dying she went back to Wichita and took care of him.

GALENA, KANSAS: Loren S. Harding, age 67, 1009 N. Henning, died at 9:22 pm, Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at Freeman Hospital-West, Joplin, MO following an illness.
Mr. Harding was born January 19, 1938 at Oronogo, MO. His parents were Lawrence Glen and Mary Ellen (Kendall) Harding.
He graduated from Galena High School in 1957.
Then he entered the US Army, serving from 1957 – 1961.
He then moved to Wichita, KS for a few years. He returned to Galena 36 years ago.
He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years, retiring in 2001.
He was a member of the Galena Elks Lodge.
He was married to Barbara Brown on December 23, 1960 at Miami, OK. She preceded him in death June 24, 2003.
Surviving are three sons, Loren G (wife, Joni) Harding, Galena, KS, William L (wife, Jennifer) Harding, Galena, KS, and James R. Harding, Baxter Springs, KS; and three grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two half brothers; Gorman Wampler and Leon Wampler.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Jeff D. Martin will officiate.
Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, KS.

GALENA, Kan. - Mrs. Minnie Mae Hatfield, 74, 810 Euclid Ave., Galena, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday at a Hot Springs, Ark., hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack Sunday night while visiting there.
Mrs. Hatfield was born June 28, 1903 in Galena, and had lived in Galena throughout her life. She was a member of 6th Street Baptist Church.
Her husband, Roy A. Hatfield, died July 15, 1955.
She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Zola Birkinsha, Mrs. Annibel Millard, and Mrs. Helen Downey all of Galena, Mrs. Lois Schwebke, West Allis, Wis., and Mrs. Judy Martin, St Charles, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Bernice McCumber, Galena, Mrs. Helen Walters, Joplin, and Mrs. Ruth Thomason, Dallas, Tex.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dickey (Richard) Burns, 45, Tacoma, Wash., was killed instantly July 18, 1985, when he was involved in a head on collision. Seven people were killed in the accident.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 23 in Tacoma.
Dicky was born Oct. 29, 1939.
He is survived by two daughters, Tena Marie and Brbie (sic) of the home; his mother, Nadine Steele of Port Orchard, Wash., and four sisters and 1 brother.

GALENA, Kan. — Mary Wade, 92, 505 Bellevue St., died at 6:10 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.
Mrs. Wade was born July 30,1903, at Chickasha, Okla., in Indian Territory.
She lived in Galena most of her life. She was a homemaker.
She was a panel analyst for General Mills Food for 40 years and had served on the Galena election board for a number of years.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Galena. She had been Sunday school superintendent and had taught the Adult Bible Class for several years. She started the Children’s Church Ministry and was its director for 35 years. She served on the Women’s Missionary Council for 21 years and had been chairwoman of Vacation Bible Schools.
She was a member of the Parks-Wade American Legion post auxiliary and the Dorcas Club, both of Galena.
She was a member of the Galena Chapter of the American Red Cross and provided service to military families for 17 years.
She married Andrew Jack Wade on June 16, 1920, at Columbus. He died April 4, 1971.
Survivors include a son, George Marion Wade, Joplin; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Assembly of God Church, Galena. The Rev. G.P. Hertwick and the Rev. George Marion Wade will officiate.
Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena.
Pallbearers will be Paul David Wade, Stan Wade. Phillip Wade, Keith Wade, Sam Helm and Rex Schurenstadt.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.

Mr. Scofield was born Dec. 15, 1939, at Galena. He moved to Columbus 20 years ago from Galena.
He was an assembly worker at Vickers Inc., Joplin, retiring in September 1993.
He married Donna Howard on Oct. 12, 1958 at Baxter Springs. She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Johnnie Scofield Jr., state of Michigan; two daughters, Cheryl Seeman and Brenda Jones, both of Baxter Springs; two brothers, Richard L. Scofield, Galena, and Norman R. Scofield, Riverton route 1; a sister, Lois Scofield, Galena; and 11 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lowell (Kan.) Cemetery.

GALENA, Kan. Sam Arthur Martin Sr., age 67, 3571 SE Quaker Road, died at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at St Johns Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., following an illness.
Sam was born May 16, 1939, in Galena. His parents were Orbia Wm. and Idona (Shrock) Martin.
Sam graduated from Galena High School in 1957. He then joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He began working in the mining industry. It evolved into a job with the Department of Labor as a federal mine inspector. He retired in 1999. He moved back to Galena after his retirement. He loved spending time outdoors around his farm along with repairing lawn mowers. He was a Christian.
He was married to Judy A. Hart on Sept. 11, 1964, in Warrensburg, Mo. She survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Sam Martin Jr., of the home; two brothers, Frank Martin (wife, Carol), Baxter Springs, Kan., and J.P. Martin (wife, Judy), OFallon, Mo.; a cousin he was very close to, Pat Collins, Galena; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Randy Martin; and one nephew, Wayne Martin.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Pastor Jeff D. Martin will officiate.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.

BAXTER SPRINGS, KANSAS: Elmer Glenn Sturgis, age 70, passed away at 8:30 pm, Sunday, February 6, 2011 at St John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO.
He was born June 7, 1940 in Galena, KS. His parents were Elmer and Iva (Frazier) Sturgis.
He graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1957.
He worked as a carpenter doing construction in various cities for a number of years, returning to the Joplin MO area in 1976.
As a young man, he boxed in the Golden Gloves program. He was a multi-talented individual.
He was last married to Anita Rose Stewart in 1994 at Miami, OK. She passed away Dec. 23, 2009.
Surviving is one son, William Owen Sturgis, Joplin, MO; two daughters Glenda Kay Black (husband, Brett), Joplin, MO and Savannah Marie Stewart-Sturgis, Riverton, KS; 2 brothers, Jay Sturgis (wife, Margrette) Joplin, MO, and Terry Sturgis (wife, Janice) Baxter Springs, KS; 6 grandchildren, Justin Black, Brandon Sturgis, Amanda Sturgis, Amberly Ann Youngblood, Heaven Leigh Flowers, and Brittany Shanelle Flowers; and 2 great-grandchildren, Braiden Black and Alexander Joel Vanderpool.
In addition to his parents and his wife, one granddaughter, April Dawn Black preceded him in death.

Jerry D Brand, 32 Galena, KS passed away at 9:45 am Saturday morning in the Baxter Memorial Hospital where he had been admitted Oct 1. He had been in ill health for two years.
Mr. Brand was born Oct 17, 1938 at Galena, KS where he had resided all his life. He was married to Judy Lambert on November 24, 1962, at Miami, OK
He last worked as a forklift driver for Moore Cement Company. He was a member of the Park Hill Church of the Nazarene of Galena.
Loved ones who survive are his widow, Judy, 2 sets of twins Terry and Sherry, and Tammy and Sandra and 1 stepson Gary Lee Lambert all of the home. His mother Mrs. Vera Brand, a brother Charles "Freddy", 2 sisters Mrs. Beth Cruse and Mrs. Charlotte Jeffery and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Park Hill Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. LG Williams officiating.
Connie Ritchey and Rosa Mae Taber furnished the music "Old Rugged Cross" and "Mansion over the Hilltop.
Those who served as pallbearers were Floyd Moss, Bill Charles, Jim Ridgeway, Jim Davis, Henry Ridgeway, James Davis, Henry Duvall and Jimmy DeGraffenreid.
He was laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Galena with arrangements by the Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena.

John William Russell, age 67, passed away at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2007, at The National Health Care of Joplin, where he had been a resident for almost a year.
He was born April 12, 1939, in Joplin, to William Lee and Nellie Bernadine Parks Russell, of Galena, Kan. They preceded him in death.
His body was taken for cremation.
"Johnny" grew up in Galena, attended Galena schools and graduated with the high school class of 1957. He later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Later, he worked as a laborer in Springfield, Mo., where he made his home for a number of years. He was a Baptist by faith.
He is survived by four sisters, Alice Lockett, of Hillsboro, Ore., Nellie Hoskins and husband, Max, of Galena, Jennyne Russell, of Joplin, and Sally Heiser and husband, David, of Garden City, Kan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena. Pastor Bob Dart, Galena United Methodist Church will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Memorial Fund, Galena United Methodist Church, where Johnny and his family attended as he grew up.
