Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Muffley Funeral Home and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Clark Funeral Home in Granby, Mo.Charlene was born Oct. 25, 1932, to Walter P. and Maud (Haley) Poor in Fairview, Mo.She married Bernard Turnipseed Sept. 30, 1956, in Portales, N.M.She worked for Mountain Bell for 26 years. She was a member of Parkland Baptist and Mountain Bell Pioneers. She loved to fish, hunt and play golf.Survivors include Bernard, of the home; a sister, Cynthia Harris, of Stark City, Mo.; three daughters, Connie (Dean) Randolph, of Frisco, Texas, Vickie (Chad) Lydick and Pattie (Bo) Brown, both of Clovis; and six grandchildren, Heather Stokes, Amanda Crawford, Sara Lydick, Shay Lydick, Haley Coleman and Jared Brown. COLUMBUS, KS — Joyce Marie Garner, of Columbus, Kan., passed away Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Higher Call Nursing Center in Quapaw, Okla. She was 72.Mrs. Garner was born Jan. 12, 1938, in Crestline, Kan., to John and Letha (Roberts) Howard. She had lived in Columbus all her life and was a homemaker.She loved family times with everyone, enjoyed holiday meals and cooking for the entire neighborhood. She enjoyed going with Jerry regardless of where he was going to the auctions, flea markets or the cattle sales. She was an avid oil painter and taught many how to enjoy the art. She enjoyed her family the most.She married Jerry Garner June 8, 1956, in Columbus. He preceded her in death.She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bobby Howard; and a granddaughter.Survivors include son, Jack Garner and wife, Gayle, of Columbus; daughter, Jeri Lynn Andrews, of Baxter Springs, Kan.; brother, Stanley Howard and wife, Clara, of Owasso, Okla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.Graveside services will be Friday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Park Cemetery in Columbus. CARL JUNCTION, MO — John Russel Burgreen Sr., age 78, Carl Junction, passed away at 11:16 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Freeman West Hospital.John was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Watson, W.Va., to the late L.H. Burgreen and Georgie Fuller Burgreen and had lived in the Joplin area for several years moving from Southeast Kansas.John graduated from Fairmont High School, Fairmont, W.Va., and graduated from the University of Virginia at Morgantown in 1951. He entered the United States Navy in 1952, and was discharged with honorable distinction in 1964. He served in the Korean War.John served as a United Methodist minister for over 30 years in both Ohio and Kansas. He was very active in the Lions Club. He served as past president of the Columbus, Kan. Lions Club and was past District Governor of 17-S, Southeast Kansas.John married Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Miller. Together they had four children.He then married Elizabeth Ann Reedy on May 20, 2000, in Pittsburg, Kan. She survives at the home.Additional survivors include his children, John Burgreen Jr., Lawrenceville, Va., Mary Stites, New Mexico, Joseph Burgreen Jr, Meriden, Kan., and Ellen McKenny, Oak Harbour, Wash.; one stepson, Dan Engler, Springfield, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Margaret Engler, Colorado, Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one step grandson; and one brother, Hartley Burgreen, Grafton, W.Va. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Albert.John has been taken for cremation. LEE'S SUMMIT, MO — Carol "Jeannie" Blase, 71, of Lee's Summit, Mo., passed away on Sept. 13, 2010, at the John Knox Village Care Center, surrounded by her family.Jeannie was born on Sept. 24, 1938, in Colchester, Ill., the daughter of Virgil and Burnice (Mustered) Swanson. She was educated in Illinois, and received her Associates Degree from Joplin Junior College in Missouri. She also received her Pre-School Teaching Certificate from the State of Illinois, College of DuPage. Jeannie loved children and devoted her time to teaching pre-school for over 25 years, the last 18 being at Timothy Lutheran Church, retiring in 2004. She was a long-time member of Timothy Lutheran Church and was very faithful in her attendance and service. She was very active in the LWML, bible studies, small group and putting together the church newsletter. Jeannie enjoyed creating baby quilts as gifts for her family.She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Delbert Swanson; and sister, Virginia "Bee" Stevenson.Jeannie leaves behind her husband of 43 years, Richard; son, Andrew Blase, of Lee's Summit; siblings, Dot Cable and husband, Robert, of Joplin, Mo., Bill Swanson, of Ottawa, Ill., and Terri Hoyt, of New Lenox, Ill.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Swanson, of Ottawa, Ill.; and brother-in-law, Paul Stevenson, of Winchester, Colo.The family will receive friends at Meyers Funeral Chapel, Blue Springs, Mo., from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15. Charles, age 89 of Springfield, Mo., went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, in his home following a lengthy illness.He was born March 19, 1921, in Lawrence County, Mo., to Cecil and Ruby (Arthur) Charles. She is now at rest awaiting the resurrection.Ozella was born Oct. 26, 1920, in Joplin, Mo., the daughter of the late Fred and Bertie (McCullough) Graves. She was a lifetime area resident.Ozella was united in marriage to James F. Bard in Girard, Kan., Nov. 22, 1936. She was converted during a revival at the Apostolic Faith Church in Prosperity, Mo., in 1950. She, with husband James faithfully attended the original Apostolic Faith Church on East 4th Street in Joplin, until shortly before her passing. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and devoted her life to providing a Christian home for James and her family. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening and traveling the world with her husband.She is survived by her husband of almost 74 years, James F. Bard, Joplin; one son, Jim Bard and wife, Kathy, Seneca, Mo.; three daughters, Janet Stemm and husband, Walter, Joyce Babst and husband, Bob, all of Joplin, and Carol Dewees and husband John, Seneca, Mo.; three brothers, James Graves, Galena, Kan., Galen Graves, Kansas City, Mo., and Lewis Graves, Seneca; three sisters, Mary Irick, Margaret Wilson and Margie Kelly, all of Joplin; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. PITTSBURG, Kan. — Evelyn Marie Cole, 83, of Pittsburg, Kan., passed away at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at her home.She was born Sept. 30, 1926, at Pittsburg, the daughter of Guy Arnold and Sylvia Marguerite (Crocker) Bennett. She began her education in a one room country school house off East 4th Street for one year and then attended Lincoln Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1945.On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1946, she was united in marriage to Homer Gene Cole at the First Baptist Church in Pittsburg.Mrs. Cole dipped ice cream at Puritan Dairy, and then worked as a telephone operator at SW Bell. She worked alongside with her husband at bowling alleys in Joplin, Mo., Shawnee and Okmulgee, Okla., and in January 1966, they became owners of Holiday Lanes in Pittsburg. She was also a housewife and mother, and Girl Scout leader.Membership was held in the First Baptist Church, where she was church treasurer for over 20 years and a deaconess; she was also a member of Disabled Veteran's Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Women's Bowling Association, Women's Golf Association, AARP, and American Baptist Women.Survivors include her husband, Homer Cole, of the home; a son, Michael Stephen "Mike" Cole and wife, Lori, of Pittsburg; two daughters, Cathy Ann Cole, of Pittsburg, and Cynthia Jean "Cindy" Bugni and husband, Chuck, of Frontenac; three grandsons, Chad and wife, Melissa Bugni, of Pittsburg, Adam Michael Cole, of Kansas City, Kan., and Shawn and wife, Haley Bugni, of Frontenac; two granddaughters, Jennifer and husband, Ira Horyna, of Frontenac, and Courtney and husband, Wes Payne, of Kirksville, Mo.; great-grandson, Gunner Montgomery Horyna; two great-granddaughters, Faith Leonard and Alexis "Lexi" Nicole Payne. GALENA, Kan. — S. W. (Dr. Bill) Scorse Jr., D.D.S., M.S., passed away at 2:58 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, in Joplin, Mo.Dr. Bill was born Dec. 16, 1930 at Spears Hospital, Dayton, Ky., to S. W. Scorse, M.D., and Beatrice Conroy Scorse. Dr. Bill was one of six children.His education began in Amelia, Ohio, and continued through moves to Missouri and Texas. He received his high school diploma from the former Price College in Amarillo, Texas. He attended the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1949 to 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956, and attended Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kan., receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1956. He then entered dental school at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Dentistry and graduated with honors in 1960. He continued his education at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and General Hospital, Kansas City and received his Master of Science in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery in 1963. Dr. Bill set up his practice in Joplin, Mo., in the summer of 1963 and continued his practice until his retirement on May 3, 2004.Dr. Bill was on staff at several hospitals in the area, including St. John's Regional Medical Center, Freeman Health System, and the former Oak Hill Hospital, all in Joplin, and Mount Carmel Hospital, Pittsburg, Kan. He was licensed to practice in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Dr. Bill was a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a member of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Midwest and Southwest Societies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Missouri Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Missouri Dental Society, Southwest Missouri and Northeast Oklahoma Dental Societies.On Sept. 11, 1950, he married Shirley A. JOPLIN, Mo. — Frances Ann Cline, 68, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, peacefully in her home after a short battle with cancer.Frances was born on Oct. 25, 1941, in Neosho, Mo., daughter of the late Maxine Price. She was a long-time resident of Joplin, where she and her husband were owners and administrators for 26 years of Cline's Residential Care Facility and members of Bethel Assembly of God Church.Frances married William R. Cline on April 19, 1965. He preceded her in death on July 4, 2009. She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Jon Spencer and Raymond Cline.She is survived by one brother, Greg Dickey, Joplin; three daughters, Theresa Lane, Joplin, Lea Shirk, Carterville, and Lynn Peavler, Joplin; one son, Stephen Cline, Kansas City; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — Kent David Hunter, age 41, of Joplin, Mo., formerly of New York City, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center.Kent was born July 29, 1969, in Joplin, to Bud and Gerri Hunter. He grew up in Joplin and graduated from Joplin Senior High in 1987. He graduated from University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor's degree in education and a master's in history. He continued to work toward a Ph.D.Kent fulfilled a dream by moving to New York City in 1999, where he taught at colleges and hospitals. He graduated from Fordham University with a law degree. He practiced law in New York City and his work took him to several other East Coast states. He returned to Missouri for work in late 2009.Kent loved New York City, especially Brooklyn, and all it had to offer. He was an enthusiastic patron of museums, art and film. He loved to hike and camp, especially in upstate New York. He enjoyed playing basketball, running, old architecture, and travel. He had many friends with whom he was in constant contact. Reading was a lifelong passion for Kent. He was very well read on many subjects and was a gifted writer. Kent had a deep love and concern for people and animals. He was active in rescuing and caring for feral cats in New York City. He was Christian and was confirmed at age 14 at Immanuel Lutheran Church.Survivors include his mother, Gerri Hunter, of Joplin; his father, James A. (Bud) Hunter, of Fairland, Okla. CARL JUNCTION, MO — John Russel Burgreen Sr., age 78, Carl Junction, passed away at 11:16 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Freeman West Hospital. John was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Watson, W.Va., to the late L.H. Burgreen and Georgie Fuller Burgreen and had lived in the Joplin area for several years moving from Southeast Kansas. John graduated from East Fairmont High School, Fairmont, W.Va., and attended the University of West Virginia at Morgantown. He entered the United States Navy in 1952, and served for 12 years. He served in the Korean War. John served as a United Methodist minister for over 30 years in both Ohio and Kansas. He was very active in the Lions Club. He served as past president of the Columbus, Kan. Lions Club and was past District Governor of 17-S, Southeast Kansas. John married Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Miller. Together they had four children. He then married Elizabeth Ann Kline on May 20, 2000, in Pittsburg, Kan. She survives at the home. Additional survivors include his children, John Burgreen Jr., Lawrenceville, Va., Mary Stites, New Mexico, Joseph Burgreen Jr, Meriden, Kan., and Ellen McKenny, Oak Harbour, Wash.; one stepson, Dan Engler, Springfield, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Margaret Engler, Colorado, Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one step grandson; and one brother, Hartley Burgreen, Grafton, W.Va. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Albert. John has been taken for cremation. Memorial services are planned at Carl Junction United Methodist Sunday at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends following the services at the church. JOPLIN, MO — William R. "Bill" Johnson, 82, of Joplin, Mo., passed away Sept. 16,2010. Bill was born July 19, 1928, in Lincolnville, Okla., to the late William R. Johnson and Nancy Willhite Johnson. He attended schools in Kansas, and graduated from Joplin Senior High School in 1946. Bill retired in 1986, from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a design engineer, after 40 years of service. He coached Little League Baseball and was a former member of the Missouri Bowling Association. He enjoyed golfing and woodworking. Bill is survived by his wife, Mary H. Johnson. They were married April 15, 1955. Survivors include two sons, William R. "Bob" Johnson III and Gregory A. PITTSBURG, KS — Edythe Clare Williams McNally, 93, of Pittsburg, Kan., passed away at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg. She was born Dec. 13, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., to Timothy Francis and Pearl (Penson) Williams. She attended Aquinas Catholic High school in Chicago. While living in London, England with her parents she attended The University of London and also attended The Institute of Higher Learning University in Switzerland. She attended Mundelein College in Chicago and graduated from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg in 1951, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She married, Pittsburg Industrialist, Edward Thomas McNally on May 30, 1940, at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church in Chicago. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1998. Mrs. McNally was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Crestwood Country Club and former member of The Kansas City Club, Kansas City, Mo. She also held membership and was affiliated with Kansas Crippled Children¹s Service League Board of Directors, Pittsburg Girl Scout Council Board of Directors (was responsible for ³integrating² the Scouting Program in Pittsburg), Kansas Mother of the Year Selection Committee, Volunteer of the Year Mt. Carmel - 1989, Parsons State Hospital volunteer, Pittsburg City Recreation Commission Board of Directors, McNally Pittsburg Mfg. Corp Board of Directors, Kansas Geological Survey Board of Directors, president Crestwood Country Club, created the ³Pittsburg Beautiful² committee, Mount Carmel Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors/president, Mount Carmel Medical Center Hospice volunteer, Pittsburg State University Foundation Board of Directors, Mount Carmel Cancer Center co-chairman fundraiser and Pittsburg Duplicate Bridge Club. She also began the Mount Carmel Medical Center ³Gala² in order to raise money for special needs for the Cancer Center. She was instrumental in influencing others who would then support the university in providing major gifts to the Pittsburg State University College of Business and the Kelce Planetarium and the Kansas Technology Center. Edythe Clare Williams McNally, 93, of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, September 16, 2010, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg.
She was born December 13, 1916, in Chicago, Illinois to Timothy Francis and Pearl (Penson) Williams.

JOPLIN, MO — Mary Margaret Braeckel, age 92,, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at home on Sept. 15, 2010. Mary Margaret was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Chillicothe, Mo., to Milton and Mamie (Conway) Alcott. Her family moved to Ponca City, Okla., and then to Joplin. Mary Margaret graduated from Joplin Senior High School in 1935. Mary Margaret then attended Webster College in St. Louis, and Sarachon Hooley Secretarial School in Kansas City. Mary Margaret married Gerhardt Braeckel on Jan. 20, 1940. They had five sons: Gerry (1941), Tom (1944), Mike (1948), Jim (1951), and Bill (1956). During World War II, the family lived in St. Joseph, Mo., Salina, Kan., and Wichita, Kan., where Gerhardt helped build Army airfields. In 1944, Mary Margaret moved back to Joplin and lived with her mother and father at 814 Byers Avenue until the war was over. In 1948, Mary Margaret and Gerhardt built a house on a small farm on Duquesne Road, near Gerhardt's parents, Augusta and Marcus Braeckel, where the boys raised a number of farm animals. Mary Margaret went back to school and received an Associate in Arts from Missouri Southern. She subsequently worked at Ferguson Laboratories for several years. Mary Margaret and Gerhardt enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the United States with family and friends. Attending the Passion Play at Oberammergau was especially memorable as was their pilgrimage to Medjugorje in the former Yugoslavia. They moved back into the city, Joplin in 1994. She was a faithful member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church where she was a member of the PCCW/Altar and Rosary Society and volunteer organist for many years. She was a member of the Joplin 99 Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerhardt on April 21, 1994; and her middle son, Michael on May 1, 2010. Mary Margaret is survived by her other sons, Gerhardt (Gerry) and his wife, Salvadora Katosang and granddaughter, Maria Katarina; Thomas and his wife, Linda and grandson, Douglas and wife, Becky; Michael's widow, Rosemary and grandson, Jonathan and fiance, Robin Deavours; James and his wife, Joy and grandchildren, Kristi and great-granddaughter, Kaylee, Gregory and his wife, Breanna and Brian; William and his daughter, Bridget and her fiancé, Rick Silva, sons, Eric and Patrick; and by her cousins, Sue Storey, Ann Hadel and Jack Storey. The funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 8th and Pearl, Joplin, at 10 a.m. on Sept. 20, burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Loretta was born Feb. 21, 1936, in Joplin, and was a lifetime resident. She was employed as a CNA with the former Elmhurst Nursing Home in Webb City, Mo. Loretta was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. JOPLIN, MO — David E. Rhodes, age 49, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010. David was born Feb. 7, 1961, in Hythe, England. He was trained as a pastry chef in England, lived a short time in Australia, and moved to Missouri 18 years ago. He owned the Oven Door Bakery in Carl Junction, and was in the process of reopening his bakery. He formerly worked at King Press and several local restaurants. He attended First Presbyterian Church in Webb City, and later Bethany Presbyterian Church in Joplin. David enjoyed ice skating and skiing, Karaoke, working on old cars and flying remote control airplanes. He was a member of the Joplin RC Flight Club. David married Vickie Morey July 19, 2010, in Eureka Springs, Ark. She survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Susan Rhodes and her mother, Janet Kemm Rhodes, Conway, Ark.; a stepson, Treyson Morey; his stepmother, Jill Rhodes, Stockport, Manchester, England; a brother, Charles Rhodes, Stockport, Manchester, England; and a sister Angela Rhodes, Dyserth, Wales, United Kingdom. David requested that his body be donated to science. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Bethany Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service. CARTHAGE, MO — Rosa Ellen Good, 96, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at St. Luke's Nursing Center in Carthage, Mo. She was born April 20, 1914, in Jasper, Mo., to Newton and Sarah (Coffelt) Berryhill. She was raised on a farm in Barton County. As a young woman, she moved to Carthage. She attended Diamond Country school in Barton County and Nashville, Mo. She worked for Big Smith Manufacturing, Karbes Grocery, Rhinehart's Grocery and worked in the Carthage High School cafeteria in later years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Carthage. She married Lester Good on June 22, 1935, in Fort Smith, Ark. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1997. She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Cooper and husband, Larry, Carthage, and Lawanda Quade and husband, Don, Golden City. Additional survivors include grandchildren, Michael Cooper, Springfield, Mo., Michele Furry, Monett, Mo., Melinda Baugh, Carthage, Teresa Ford, Nicholasville, Ky., Jeff Quade, Carthage, and Sara Cox, Joplin. BRANSON, Mo. — Edna Ann Kilgore, 73, a former longtime resident of Joplin, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2010, at Skaggs Hospital in Branson, Mo., where she had resided for the past two years.Edna was born May 24, 1937, in Minnesota, to Roy and Emma Ralston. Eventually, she returned to school at Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Mo., earned her Masters in education and English literature and subsequently taught middle school English until her retirement in 1995. She had the opportunity to influence many individuals, both young and old, with her intelligence, her tenacity, her gracefulness, her courage and her integrity. Mrs. Wright died at home with her family by her side.Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. George W. Wright; by her parents; by her sister, Patricia Marlatt Leonard; by her brother, E.L. Marlatt; by an infant daughter, Rebecca Lynn Wright; and by an infant son, Robert Clark Wright.Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Rebecca W. and James N. CARTHAGE, Mo. — Johnnie R. Wheat, 83, of Carthage, Mo., passed away at 6:20 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at his residence.Johnnie was born May 1, 1927, in Avilla, Mo. He was the son of John A. Wheat and Myrtle King Wheat. Johnnie was a lifetime Carthage resident. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.Johnnie owned and operated his own yard mowing business. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Carthage. Johnnie was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9, D.A.V. Crossroads Chapter No. 41, 40, and 8 American Legion. He served as chaplain for the D.A.V. and the American Legion.Johnnie also served as district chaplain for the American Legion.Johnnie was united in marriage to Lorene Clyman on May 18, 1951, in Carthage. They shared 59 years of marriage. Lorene survives.Other survivors include two sons, John W. Wheat and Dale E. Wheat; three daughters, Phyllis M. Mills, Deborah J. Loman and Anne C. "Curly" Wilson passed away suddenly at his home on Sept. 18, 2010, at the age of 70.Keith was born May 7, 1940, to the late Woody and Martha Treadway Wilson.He worked as a machinist at Tee-Tool for several years. Keith was a very active member of the Joplin Elks Lodge No. 501 for 33 years. He loved to play golf and enjoyed bowling. RIVERTON, KS — Homer Keith Watson, 81, of Riverton, Kan., went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010.Homer was born in Melrose, Kan., on March 31, 1929. He moved to Lowell, Kan., with his family in 1943, and lived in the Riverton area for most of his life. He was a beloved member of his church, First United Methodist Church in Baxter Springs, Kan.He retired from Sperry Vickers after 34 years and for General Steel Fabrications after 12 years. Homer enjoyed family, gardening, fishing and visiting his girls in Florida. He liked traveling with his wife and was an avid bowler for many years. He enjoyed evenings on the front porch, playing word puzzles and reading his bible.He is the beloved husband of Samme (Shrock) Watson, who survives of the home. They were united in marriage for 54 years. He was a loving and devoted father to his two daughters, Lyn Watson and Lisa Wangelin (husband Steve).He cherished his two granddaughters, Brooke Watson (husband Joe) and Emma Wangelin, and was anticipating the arrival of his first great-grandson, Aiden Joseph Prezas.Homer is preceded in death by his wonderful parents, Elmer (Slim) and Lucille Horne; his sisters, Una Vay (Poke) Shady and Mary Ann Dennison.He is survived by his brother, Clarance (Bud) Lynn Watson; his sisters, Joann Loehrs and Linda Ruddle; and many loving nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Anna Mae was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Great Bend, Kan., one of nine children to James Francis and Lottie Hazel Kennedy. She married Budwin "Red" Miles Sandtorf on June 29, 1946, in Columbus, Kan. Survivors include a daughter, Sonja and her husband, Jamie McNett, of Boise; a son, Tommie and his wife, Elaine Sandtorf, of Carl Junction, Mo.; three grandchildren, Lee Sandtorf, Tim Sandtorf and Leslie Stewart; four great-grandchildren; one sister; seven step grandchildren; 34 step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren. His parents were Tommie and Georgia (Bailey) Kitch. While a young boy, his mother passed away. He was later raised by his father and step mother, Gladys Hall Kitch. He had lived in Galena all of his life. Mr. Kitch entered the U.S. Air Force in 1954, and continued to serve his country until 1963. He began working at Farmers Chemical Co, Joplin in 1970, until his retirement in 1995. He was an active member of the Galena Volunteer Fire Department for eight years in the 1970s. His hobby was woodworking. He enjoyed traveling. Surviving are three sons, Tommy and Debbie Kitch, Carl Junction, Mo., Gary Michael Kitch, Junction City, Kan., and Bradley "Buddy" and Denise Kitch, Enterprise, Ala.; one daughter, Wanda and Mark Shoemaker, Reading, Kan.; one step-brother, Dan Price, Galena, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. "Dory" Strecker, age 91, of Webb City, Mo., passed away at 7:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at his home following a short illness.Mr. Strecker was born Aug. 8, 1919, in Jasper, Mo., to Arthur and Carrie Storbeck Strecker. He was a 1937 graduate of Jasper High School and had lived in this area all of his life. He was an Army Veteran of World War II., serving in the Battle of the Bulge.He was employed at Leggett and Platt in Carthage for 32 years, retiring in 1983.Mr. Strecker married Helen Louise "Bo" Tiller on March 19, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives.Additional survivors include one daughter, Susan Strecker, Webb City; and one sister, Mary Rice, of Blue Springs, Mo. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA — Helen Elizabeth (Betty) Redmond, passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Bainbridge Island, Wash.Betty was the widow of John F. Redmond, who died in 2005. John was the son of Samuel B. and Martha Connelly Redmond, of Carthage, and over the years, the couple often visited their cousins in the Robert Redmond and Russell Smith families.Betty was born on April 21, 1926, the daughter of John and Vivian Nelson, of Vancouver, British Colombia, and a sister of the late John A. Nelson and Margaret N. Heeney, also of Vancouver.Since their marriage at Vancouver in 1961, John and Betty resided in Calgary, Toronto and Houston, and retired to there on Banbridge Island in 1974.She is survived by her son, Gregory Nelson Redmond, of Los Angeles, Calif.; her stepson, John C. Redmond and his wife, Else, of Lincoln, Calif.; stepson, Daniel P. Redmond M.D., of Silver Spring, Md.; and Myrna L. Redmond, widow of stepson, Richard C. Redmond, of Colchester, Vt. John and Betty's family includes 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nephews, Rod Nelson, Michael Nelson, Barry Nelson and Brad Heeney; and niece, Lisa Heeney, who reside in British Columbia.Betty was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Bainbridge Island, where she served on the altar guild for many years. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed summers with John cruising the waters of Alaska and British Columbia aboard their yacht, the "Martha C".Betty's ashes will be interred with those of her husband in Park Cemetery, Carthage. During a recent hospitalization in August, Mike was visited by his guardian angel, St. Michael. Mike was asked if he was ready to go to heaven. JOPLIN, MO — Viola Mae Riggen, age 90, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 9:52 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.Born Sept. 27, 1919, in Bend, Ore., she was the daughter of the late Heber Nicholas Hopkins and Velva Lavina Stanley Hopkins and had lived in Joplin since 1998, moving from Grand Junction, Colo. She had previously lived in Casper, Wyo. Viola managed fabric stores in both Casper and Grand Junction. She was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church.Survivors include two sons, Jim Riggen and wife, Judie, of Joplin, and Fred Riggen and wife, Carolyn, of Dunnellon, Fla.; one daughter, Sharon Riggen, of Grand Junction; one sister, Francine Neal, of Delta, Colo.; four grandchildren, Carla, Donna, Dianna and Matt; and seven great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Lavaughn and Ezra Hopkins, preceded her in death.Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Parker Chapel, after which, the family will receive friends. Rev. JOPLIN, MO — Gloria Jean Evans passed away on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, in Joplin.Gloria was the widow of Harold Eugene Evans, who died in 1987. Shortly after they were married, Harold was transferred by Eagle Picher Industries from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Joplin.Gloria was born in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., on July 9, 1927. She was the daughter of George and Marion Saunders. She attended Miami University of Ohio and received a degree in business. Gloria later worked as a tax accountant for several years. She was active in Freeman Auxiliary, the Women's Club of Joplin, and enjoyed participating in her bridge club. Gloria loved her family, was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling the world. She was an animal lover and a history buff, with special interest in European history.Gloria is survived by her son, David Evans and his wife, Karen; her daughter, Gail Blue and her husband, Steve; and five grandchildren, Mallory, Grant and Gareth Evans and Evan and Anna Blue, all of Joplin. Johnson Smith.Calvin graduated from the former Joplin Junior College and received his degree in education from the former Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. He then obtained his masters degree from Pittsburg State University. Calvin taught in Southwest Missouri for 37 years, 28 of which were within the Joplin school system. He also served as principal in Sulphur Springs, Ark., and assistant principal in the junior high schools of the Joplin R-VIII school system.Calvin married Margaret J. Johnson on Dec. 30, 1939, in Pineville, Mo. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2005.Survivors include four sons, Lawrence William Smith, Avondale, Ariz., David Smith, Joplin, James Richard Smith, Joplin, and Randall E. Smith, Joplin; a sister, Lena Vaughn, Pineville; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She did alterations for Kennedy Cleaners for years. She loved all types of birds, especially love birds, doves and canaries. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She married Clyde Osborne in 1949. He preceded her in death. She married Andrew Jama in 1968 and he preceded her in death in 1970. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Clydene Osborne, in 1961; two brothers, John and Emmett Helm; and two sisters, Barbara Joanne Helms and Betty Cox. CARTHAGE, MO — Emma Lou Monroe, 81, Carthage, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage, after a sudden illness. Emma Lou Hart was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Carthage, the daughter of Orrin McKinley Hart and Delia (Fenton) Hart. She attended Carthage public schools and was a graduate of Carthage High School. She married Arthur W. Monroe on March 1, 1950, in Carthage and he preceded her in death on May 18, 2010. Emma Lou was a homemaker and a co-owner of Broadway Cycle with her husband, Arthur. She and her husband operated Broadway Cycle Shop for 40 years, where they specialized in the repair and sales of parts and accessories for Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles. She was a Sunday school teacher at Bykota Baptist and First Baptist, Carthage, a member of the Dependable Sunday school class, First Baptist, and was actively involved in power chute flying at the Baugh Flight Park. Survivors include a son, Artie W. (Katy) Monroe, Jr., Carthage; three granddaughters, Carla Kay Monroe, Lindsay Lee Monroe, Carthage and Paula Kay, and husband, Alex Walter, Carterville; two great-grandsons, Avery A. Walter, Carterville, and Lucas A. Monroe, Carthage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; five brothers and three sisters. CARTHAGE, MO — Gloria A. (Gerald) Stafford, 60, after a long illness, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at 2:45 p.m. in Carthage. She was born on Jan. 29, 1950, in Carthage, Mo. She is the daughter of the late Joe Gerard and Alberta Gerard. Gloria graduated from Carthage High School and was a lifetime resident of Carthage. She worked at various locations in the area, office manager for Tuxall Uniforms, an office clerk for Dr. Peter Richardson, secretary for the Carthage Fire Department, deputy clerk in the County Clerk¹s office for voter registration and a county clerk in the Assessor's office. She was also a licensed real estate agent in the state of Missouri. Gloria married Donald E. Stafford, on Oct. 5, 1985, and he survives. She is also survived by her son, Stacy L. Beasley, Chaplain (Cpt.) US Army, currently serving his country in Iraq, and his wife, Lori; stepdaughter, Christina Jo Stafford, and stepson, Douglas Stafford; grandchildren, Samara Beasley and Micah Beasley, who reside at Fort Hood, Texas.; stepgrandsons, Jacob and Brandon Stafford, Nathan and Nicholas Flood, who reside in Ohio. JOPLIN, MO — Francis L. Thomas, age 72, Joplin, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Freeman West Hospital from injuries he sustained in a tractor accident. Francis was born April 23, 1938, in Joplin to the late J.L. Thomas and Ogretha Thomas and had been a lifetime Joplin resident. He worked as a mechanic for Yellow Transit, Baxter Springs, Kan., for 30 years. MIAMI, OK — Doloris Nadine (Foreman) Skaggs, age 82, left her earthly family on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at 6:30 a.m. to join her heavenly family which includes her husband and love of 60 years, Everett Gene Skaggs. She was born July 20, 1928, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to Ruby Pauline Banning and Clyde G Foreman. She was the oldest of four children which included two brothers, Howard Foreman, and Mick Foreman, and one sister Judy Perry. 1946 was a busy year for Doloris, she met Gene in January and was married in Columbus, Kan., on Feb. 27, she then graduated from Baxter Springs high school in May and had her first child in December. Doloris and Gene raised a total of four children: Connie Benbrook, of Dewey Okla., Cathy Handshy, of Columbus, Jesse Skaggs, of Miami Okla., and Pete Skaggs, also of Miami. The family continued to grow with the addition of 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, as well as an untold number of friends. she was a proud member of the western Cherokee nation, the White River band and the Intertribal Gourd dancers. She loved to talk, quilt, crochet, knit, read, meet new friends, travel and cook for her family. She was always the first to give a helping hand to anyone in need. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Mick Foreman, and her husband, Everett Gene Skaggs. JOPLIN, MO — Edgar Monroe "Ed" McBride, age 85, of Joplin, passed away at 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at his home after a battle with cancer. Born Feb. 25, 1925, in Havana, Ark., he was the son of the late Edgar McBride Sr. and Ruby Thompson McBride. Ed had lived in Joplin the past five years, moving from Caney, Kan., where he had made his home since 1968. He was a math teacher for many years at Caney Valley High School and previously in Dardanelle and Siloam Springs, Ark. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Methodist and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Dardanelle and Eastern Star in Coffeyville, Kan. On February 18, 1961, he married LaFama White at Stillwell, Okla. She survives. Additional survivors include two daughters, Kelley Grant and husband, David, Heather Boyd and husband, Greg, all of Joplin; one son, Greg McBride and wife, Lisa, of Bentonville, Ark.; nine grandchildren, Samantha and Morgan Cecil, Jacob Packard, Kasey, Ryan and Eric Grant, Jonathan and Mitchell McBride and Alecia McBride Myers. Graveside services with military honors will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ozark Memorial Park with Rev. David Fitzmaurice officiating. He was born March 9, 1919, in Fort Scott, Kan., to Walter Clarence Ewing and Laura Nettie Miller Ewing. He married Ona Earlene Ewing on Feb. 13, 1953, in Joplin, and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2007. George grew up in Fort Scott, and attended school there. He joined the U.S. Army and served from December 1941 to 1945. He taught high school for 48 years in various places including Hume, Walker, Sheldon and Montrose. He has lived in Sheldon since 1968. Survivors include one daughter, Robyn Fowler, Sheldon; son-in-law, Kerry Fowler, Sheldon; two granddaughters, Crystal Dawn Shepherd and her husband, Jay, Mount Vernon, and Charity Lynn Ogle and her husband, Justin, Nevada. Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Cade Ewing Shepherd, Avery Lynn Ogle and Lawson Heath Ogle; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Clarence V. Ewing and twin brothers, Leslie and Weslie Ewing; and three sisters, Nettie Biggs, Blanch Ryan and Nora Delaney. LAMAR, MO — Trula Enola Cain, age 90, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Barton County Memorial Hospital. Trula was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Latimer, Kan. She was the daughter of Lillian (Sutherland) and Otto Theel. She was a resident of Lamar for over half her life. After graduating from Emporia High School in 1938, Trula attended the College of Emporia and then graduated from Newman Memorial County Hospital in Emporia with an R.N. degree. She was united in marriage with Alvin Russell Cain on Christmas day, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo. He passed away July 10, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Lillian Theel; her brother, Edwin Theel, of Emporia, Kan.; her sister, Berniece Gray of California; and her granddaughter, Lauren Beth Selvey. Trula was very involved in her community. She was a Girl Scout leader in the 1950s and helped organize the Lamar Girl Scout Day Camp. She was a 4-H leader in the 1960s. As a 30 year member of Barton County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, she created and donated flower arrangements for their gift shop to sell. Trula also taught procedures classes for the aides at BCMH in the 1950s and organized and trained the Candy Stripers at BCMH in the 1960s and 1970s. Trula was a Lamar City Park Board member for 23 years, eight of which she served as secretary. Her great love for animals prompted her to organize the Barton County Humane Society for which she served as president for over 25 years. Trula was a member (and past president) of P.E.O. Chapter EP for almost 50 years. She was a member of the Lamar Country Club, a women's bowling league and a member of the Ladies' and a Couples' Bridge Club. Trula was a breast cancer survivor (1964) and helped many struggling with the disease. Trula was honored on several occasions being named the Beta Sigma Phi "Woman of the Yea" in 1978, the Business & Professional Women's "Woman of the Year" and the Republican Women's "Woman of the Year." Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Alderson and friend, Ed Cooper, of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Marilyn and husband, Robert Selvey, of Lamar, and Karen and husband, Max Simmons, of Lamar. She was also blessed to have three grandchildren, Kara and husband, Lee Eggerman, Matthew Simmons and Sara Simmons; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Don Theel, of St. Louis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 at Lamar United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery. WEBB CITY, MO — David J. McAferty, age 64, of Webb City, Mo., passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center. David was born January 28, 1946, in Joplin, Mo., to David and Florence McAferty. David graduated from Joplin High School in 1963. He worked as an electrician for Rosner Electric of Kansas City before working for Allen Electric of Joplin for over 30 years. He later worked for St. John¹s Hospital until retiring in 2002. David loved playing golf and building or restoring homes. He enjoyed ³tinkering² in his shop and managing his lawn. He always had a project he was working on. His greatest pleasure came from family times he and Frances had with their family and especially their grandson. David was a member of the First Christian Church, Grove, Okla. and attended First Baptist Church of Webb City. David married Frances G. Newby on May 17, 1972, in Joplin, Mo., she survives of the home. Lena was a homemaker and a retired school teacher, having taught in Jasper County rural schools, Carthage schools and California schools. She retired in 1975. Lena was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Carthage and the California Teachers Association. She was united in marriage to Edgar W. Maxwell Sr. on May 30, 1935, at Neosho, Mo. He survives. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA — Helen Elizabeth (Betty) Redmond, passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Bainbridge Island, Wash. Betty was the widow of John F. Redmond, who died in 2005. John was the son of Samuel B. and Martha Connelly Redmond, of Carthage, and over the years, the couple often visited their cousins in the Robert Redmond and Russell Smith families. Betty was born on April 21, 1926, the daughter of John and Vivian Nelson, of Vancouver, British Colombia, and a sister of the late John A. Nelson and Margaret N. Heeney, also of Vancouver. Since their marriage at Vancouver in 1961, John and Betty resided in Calgary, Toronto and Houston, and retired to there on Banbridge Island in 1974. She is survived by her son, Gregory Nelson Redmond, of Los Angeles, Calif.; her stepson, John C. Redmond and his wife, Else, of Lincoln, Calif.; stepson, Daniel P. Redmond M.D., of Silver Spring, Md.; and Myrna L. Redmond, widow of stepson, Richard C. Redmond, of Colchester, Vt. John and Betty's family includes 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nephews, Rod Nelson, Michael Nelson, Barry Nelson and Brad Heeney; and niece, Lisa Heeney, who reside in British Columbia. Betty was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Bainbridge Island, where she served on the altar guild for many years. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed summers with John cruising the waters of Alaska and British Columbia aboard their yacht, the "Martha C". Betty's ashes will be interred with those of her husband in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30. LAMAR, MO — Ethel Elizabeth Butler, age 99, of Lamar, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Truman Healthcare Center. Ethel was born Jan. 12, 1911, in Cedar County, Mo., the second of the fifteen children of J.N. and Effie (Gordon) Jeffries. On Dec. 20, 1930, at Fair Play, Mo., she married Lester Butler, and they celebrated more than 51 years together before his death March 22, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her parents; 11 brothers and sisters; a son-in-law, Buzz Gardner; and a grandson, Brad Butler. Ethel and Lester owned and operated The Electric Bakery on the west side of the Lamar Square for ten years. Many will also remember her from the Courthouse where she worked as deputy circuit clerk for many years. When Lester passed away in 1982, Ethel was appointed to complete his term as circuit clerk. She was an active member of Lamar First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Lamar Country Club, the Literary Club, and a Ladies Quartet. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Clint and Betty Jane Butler, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Helen Gardner, Lamar; two brothers, Jesse and wife, Vera Jeffries, Carthage, and Bob Jeffries, Lamar; a sister, Ruth Newman, Carthage; eight grandchildren, Larry, Stan, Jon, and Pam Butler, Kent, Jeff, and Scott Gardner, and Diane Moore; 18 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2nd at Daniel Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday. JOPLIN, MO — Patricia Ann Medlin slipped into the arms of her Heavenly Father at 7:27 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Freeman West Hospital after an extended illness. She was 56 years of age. She was born July 18, 1954, in Joplin, Mo to Clifford R. Scott Sr. and Ramona "Pat" (Ball) Scott. She was a lifetime resident of Quapaw, Okla., and Webb City, Mo. She graduated from Quapaw High School in 1972. She attended North Main Street Baptist Church, Joplin. Patty was proud of her Native American heritage. She was Quapaw, Ottawa, Modoc and Choctaw and was on the Modoc Roll. She always enjoyed going to the Ottawa Powwow and was well known for her fry bread and grape dumplings. She loved her family and enjoyed getting together to celebrate birthdays and holidays. She also loved to go fishing. Patty was a hard worker. She had a big heart and her generosity of spirit led to many lasting friendships among her coworkers. She worked as a waitress at the Joplin Stockyards Café and was currently employed as a host at Downstream Casino, Quapaw. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael N. Medlin and their two children, Scott Nonkesis Medlin and his wife, Sabrina, of Springfield, Mo., and Kayla Rae Medlin, of the home; as well as three granddaughters, Allison, Ashley and Audrey Medlin. She is survived by three brothers, William Guy Scott, of Sand Springs, Okla., Douglas E. Scott and James A. Scott, of Quapaw. She is survived by two aunts, Coweta Ulrey and Lula B. Soper as well as numerous cousins; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Jack Garnett and Clifford R. (C. R.) Scott. She was also preceded in death by two uncles, Willis Dixon and Charles Dawes; and four aunts, Cecil L. Burkybile, Juanita Kay, Oleta D. Ballard and Mendota I. Scott. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at North Main Street Baptist Church, Joplin, with Pastors Franklin Buchanan II and Jim Laws officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Joplin. Dr. Kevin Dawes will conduct Indian burial rites at the graveside. CARL JUCTION, MO — JoAnne Anderson, age 84, of Briarbrook in Carl Junction, passed away at 6:55 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center. Born April 3, 1926, in Webb City, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Florence Kilmer Carsten. Since 1953, she and her late husband owned and operated Anderson's Western Wear. She was a member of Christ's Church of Oronogo and a Charter Member of Briarbrook Golf and Country Club. On May 23, 1944, she married J.L. "Andy" Anderson at Columbus, Kan. He preceded her in death Nov. 27, 2001. A son, Marshall Anderson and a brother, Robert Carsten, also preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Steve Anderson, of Carl Junction and Robert Anderson and wife, Dee, of Joplin; four grandchildren, Elisa Bittner and husband, Richard, of Carl Junction, Erica Pefferman and husband, Brad, of Columbia, Mo., Monica Veenstra and husband, Sam, of Houston, Texas, and Rob Anderson and wife, Lori, of Pasadena, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Carsten, of Webb City; and a special love for Jennifer Woodard. Gatz on February 17, 1973. They have three children. She was a very devoted wife and mother. She was a member of St. Mary¹s Catholic Church. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Twin Hill's Country Club, Twin Hill's Ladies Golf Association and the Century Study Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and golfing. Debbie is survived by her husband of 37 years, Ronald F. Gatz, Joplin; three children, Veronica Scheurich and husband, Jeff, Joplin, Jonathan Gatz and wife, Felicia, Prairie Village, Kan., and Jason Gatz and wife, Jaclyn, Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Andrew Scheurich; her parents, Clifton B. and Mary K. JOPLIN, MO — Douglas L. Miller, age 45, of Joplin, Mo., passed away Thursday Sept. 30, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin. Douglas was born May 25, 1965, in Joplin, the son of Charles and Kathryn (Edens) Miller. In high school, he was the president of the 4H Club and was a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated from Parkwood High School in 1983 and with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Chemistry from Missouri Southern State University. Douglas worked as a lab technician for TAMKO. He was a long time member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning many honors through the years, including being elected into the Order of the Arrow as an Arrowman and as Scout Master of Troup 77 at College Heights Christian Church. He was active with the Joplin Stamp Club and was a board member and coach for the Heartland Youth Baseball League. Douglas married Titia Watson on Sept. 5, 1992, at Hornet Christian Church in Hornet, Mo. She survives. Additional survivors include his parents and two sons, Jordan and Josh Miller; his maternal grandparents, Paul and Gladys Edens; his father and mother-in-law, John and Fran Watson; ten nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wes Miller and his sister, Lucinda Miller. Funeral services have been scheduled for Tuesday Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. at College Heights Christian Church, Kevin Klein, family minister, will officiate. Burial will follow at Hornet Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late John R. and Lucille (Rice) Gilworth. She moved to Joplin from Kansas City, Mo., in 1982. She worked for the Drury Inn Suites as director of housekeeping for 10 years, retiring in 2003. Colleen grew up in the Church of Christ in Kansas City. She attended several churches in the Joplin area. She especially liked Southside Apostolic Faith Church and Forest Park Baptist.She is survived by a husband of 28 years and best of friends for 52 years. He was the caretaker to the very end as she fought her courageous battle with cancer. He was known as Gerald E. "Jerry" Ingram. LAMAR, MO — Dora "Jean" Berry Crockett, 88, of Lamar, Mo., went home to be with her Lord at 11:49 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at the Freeman Hospital in Joplin, after a short illness.Jean was born March 17, 1922, in Barton County near Lamar to George and Myrtle Cline Berry. She graduated from Lamar High School and the Stapps School of Cosmetology in Joplin.She married Everett Crockett in Buffalo, N.Y., on July 9, 1941.Jean was a beauty operator and farmer's wife in Liberal, Mo. Upon retiring they moved to Stockton Lake and later moved to Lamar. Jean was a member of the First Christian Church in Lamar.She is survived by one son, Robert Crockett and his wife, Lepha, of Columbia, Mo.; one daughter, Sandy Todd and her husband, Gary, of Lamar; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Everett; six sisters; and two brothers.

Whitten, age 98, of Joplin, Mo., formerly of Cape Coral, Fla., passed away early Saturday morning, Sept. 11, 2010, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin.Rodney was born April 22, 1912, in Lakesbury, Ark., the son of Charles and Nettie (Green) Whitten.Rodney joined the U.S. Navy in 1931, and was a member of the "On-The-Roof-Gang," O.R.T.G. Class No. 16, 1935, serving as a radioman, intercepting and decoding enemy messages in a number of intercept stations. These included Bainbridge, Astoria, Hesia, Shanghai, Corregidor, and Wahiawa. This group of dedicated and skilled operators formed the vanguard of the U.S. Naval Communications Intelligence efforts and laid the cornerstone of Naval Cryptology. Rodney was serving as a radioman on the flagship U.S.S. Pennsylvania, stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the infamous morning of Dec. 7, 1941, where he had been intercepting and decoding Japanese radio transmissions until a few days before the attack. Rodney and the Pennsylvania survived the attacks of that fateful morning. He continued to serve his country until 1947, when he retired from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant junior.After his Navy career, Rodney worked for a number of companies and organizations. These included Vickers Inc., Rocketdyne, Lowrance Electronics, Miami Dade Junior College and the Florida State Emergency Management Agency. Rodney and his wife owned and operated Whitten's House of Wigs from 1968 to 1972, and then retired in Southwest Florida. Rodney, call sign W4BI, was a licensed amateur radio operator since 1927, held an FCC First Class Radio Telegraph license and was a former member of the ARRL, Cape Coral and Florida Gold Coast radio clubs. He was a life member of the U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association and the Military Officers Association of America. Rodney was a very proficient high speed Morse code operator and message handler who kept in frequent contact with his son, Mel, via ham radio, for over 45 years. Rodney recently moved back to Joplin, where he and his wife lived with his daughter.He married Virginia Parsons in 1941, in Bentonville, Ark., and recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. She survives.Additional survivors include one daughter, Karen Buchanan, of Joplin; one son, Melvyn Whitten and his wife, Phyllis, of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Shirley Whitten, of Alabama; and four grandchildren, Jason Buchanan, Jacqui Whitten, Aaron Whitten, and Rebekah Howe; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Buchanan and Phoebe Howe; four sisters, Charlene Love, Lucy Marsh, Jeanette McDonald and Martha Unverzaght. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom Whitten; an infant granddaughter, Valarie Whitten; four sisters, Clara Heath, Lois McKee, Claudia Smithpeter and Louise Williams; and one brother, Thomas Whitten.Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary, where his body has been taken for cremation. JOPLIN, MO — Billy Franklin Shipman was born in Joplin, Mo., on Nov. 15, 1942, to Audy Franklin and Clo Ora Shipman. He passed away on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Landmark Hospital.Billy was the youngest and only boy of four siblings and grew up in Joplin, as the center of his family's world. He played (and loved) basketball at East Junior High School and Joplin Senior High School, graduated in 1961, and attended Missouri Southern State College.He worked for Rainey Roof and Sheet Metal in Joplin as a young man until 1984 and then began a 26-year career at Tamko, most recently as a manager of Technical Services for Tamko Asphalt Products, Inc.To his family and friends, Bill was known for his amazing blue eyes, his smile, his sense of humor and his trademark "What¹s goin' on?" He was extraordinarily neat and organized, particular about his appearance and his things and he enjoyed being kidded about his meticulous habits and routines. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, traveling, working in his yard and especially cooking on his Big Green Egg. He loved spending time at home, cooking with his wife, tending to his koi pond, and playing with his dogs, Dakota and Mojo and cat, Smudge.Bill married his best friend and the love of his life, Wanda Lou Adams, on Oct. 13, 2001, in the Chapel at Bella Vista, Ark. Inseparable, they loved cooking and gardening, traveling and cruising and following and cheering for their many grandchildren. They were happiest entertaining their family and friends at their lake home in Bella Vista, with a highlight always being Bill's shrimp and sausage boil on the patio. Bill was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.He is survived by his beloved Wanda; his children, Jill K. Shipman-DeHardt and her husband, Jay, of Kansas City, Mo.; and his son, Dustin Scott Shipman, of Joplin; two sisters, Peggy Whitehead, of Joplin, and Joan Peppers and her husband, Bill, of Joplin; stepchildren Jennifer Carl and her husband, Ed, of Shawnee, Kan., Angela "Angel" Haggard, of Carl Junction, Mo., and Rob Adams and his wife, Lisa, of Liberty, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Clo Ann "Penny" Pearson.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Thornhill Dillon Mortuary, 602 South Byers Avenue, Joplin, MO 64081. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday with services to follow immediately. Presiding will be family friend, the Rev. SENECA, MO — Harvey Ray Pate, 91, of Seneca, Mo., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010.He was born on a broomcorn farm in Byars, Okla., on Nov. 15, 1918, to Edna Alva and Sim Walker Pate. He played basketball only during his senior year at Capital Hill High School in Oklahoma City, performing well enough to earn a scholarship to Oklahoma State University to play for Henry Iba, acquiring the nickname "Hoss" Pate and becoming known for exceptional running and jumping prowess on the court.On Feb. 23, 1943, Harvey married Laura X. Brady, of Seneca, in New Orleans, La.During the years of World War II, he was a physical training instructor in the Army Air Corps. From 1946 to 1956, he was the head basketball coach at Cameron College in Lawton, Okla., then became head assistant at the University of Houston for 24 years, where he was responsible for recruiting the first black players at the school such as Elvin Hays of the Washington Bullets, Don Chaney of the Boston Celtics and several members of the Harlem Globetrotters.For the past 30 years, Harvey resided in Seneca, where he enjoyed the companionship of many, many friends, and included among his favorite pastimes drinking coffee in the morning at various cafes, dancing on Saturday nights and fishing in area lakes and streams.He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years in 1982; and is survived by his daughters, Suzan King and husband, Dennis, of New York City, and Laura Lea Burton and husband, Trey, of San Marcos, Texas; and sons, Tom Pate and wife, Sheri, of Austin, Texas, and Ty Pate, of Wharton, Texas. His grandchildren are Scooter Blacklock and wife, Andi, of San Francisco, Calif., Brooks Burton, of San Marcos, Texas, Brett Jarvis, of New York City, and Brady Jarvis and wife, Mollie, of Chicago, Ill, who are parents of great-grandson, Ian Thomas Jarvis.Graveside services under the direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca, will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Seneca Cemetery with family members officiating. MIAMI, OK — Longtime Miami resident, Dr. Jack Warren Robinson, died Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 2010, he was 86 years old.Dr. Robinson was born Feb. 6, 1924, to Glenn and Ethleen (Carmichael) Robinson at Miami Baptist Hospital (Integris) which was originally built by his grandfather, Thomas L. Robinson. Raised in both Miami and Oklahoma City, with his brother, Robert (Bob) Robinson, he graduated from Miami High Schoolin 1941. Jack grew up in Oklahoma, during the Great Depression, throughout his life he saw education as a way to a better life for himself and his family. He attended the University of Oklahoma, graduated from NEO A&M College in 1943, earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kansas City, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in 1946.Upon graduation from UMKC, Dr. Robinson was commissioned as lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Jack spent 23 years in the Navy, which would remain a source of great pride to him to the end of his life. In 1948, his carrier, USS Valley Forge, was the first Navy carrier to go around the world, while in Hawaii, he went on a blind date and met and later married his wife of 35 years, Gloria McAlister Robinson. He later was sent to Walter Reed Hospital to begin a two-year residency in Pathology, which culminated in his graduation from Georgetown University with a Master of Science in 1954.After retiring from the Navy as a captain in 1965, Dr. Robinson returned to Miami, built a successful private practice and raised cattle on the Glennora ranch, until retiring from private practice in 1985.Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Oklahoma Dental Association, the American Dental Society and the National Rifle Association.He enjoyed his retirement years and he enjoyed numerous hobbies including woodworking at NEO, flying radio controlled airplanes, singing in the Tristatesmen chorus, bird hunting and trout fishing.He was a devoted husband and family man who was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Robinson when she passed away in 1983; his second wife, Kay Beusher Robinson; and his eldest son, Dr. Thomas Kellogg Robinson DDS.He is survived by his daughter, Mary Robinson and his son, Timothy Robinson and their spouses, his daughter-in-law, Jackie Robinson; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, Oct. 7, at G.A.R. Cemetery, Miami.

Robertson, 93, of Joplin, departed this life Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the St. John's Medical Center after a short illness.Bob was born on Aug. 31, 1917, to the late Martin E. and Edith (Harden) Robertson in Joplin.His father died at an early age, which required Bob to begin work by delivering groceries by bicycle. He graduated in 1934, from Nevada High School and then went on to further his education at Fort Scott Junior College, where he graduated with an associates degree. He went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, where he acquired his nickname, "Bob".Bob was employed at Foodtown, where he worked until his retirement in 1982.During his employment, he met a lifelong friend, Minnie Goodman. He asked her out for their first date over the frozen food section. They dated until her passing in 1997.He was an avid reader and had a never ending thirst for learning. He also enjoyed carpentry and Civil War history.He is survived by two cousins, Faye Hutson and Virginia Vagt, both of Oregon; and friend, Rory Goodman, of Joplin.Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary with Rev. Gregory Mech officiating. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Burial will be in Webb City Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Billy Garroute, Jack Maggard, Chestene Burns, Mitch Ogle, Steve Haslip and Donnie Pittman.
