Gulick, age 88, of Joplin, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, following a short illness. Homer was born on Feb. 19, 1917, in Sarcoxie, Mo., the son of the late Frank Gulick and Della Ann Wright. He has been a lifetime area resident. After graduating from Sarcoxie High School, Homer enlisted in the Army, serving his country during World War II. He was a past Commander for the V.F.W. Post 534. He had worked for Coca-Cola as a route salesman. Homer married Norma J. Miller on March 11, 1948, in Monett, Mo. She preceded him in death on May 29, 2003. Additional survivors include two sons, Jack Gulick and wife, Laura and Ronald Gulick and wife, Sue, both of Joplin; one daughter, Patsy Crow and husband, Jack, Joplin; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. John Holdman, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. The pallbearers will be John Malcom, Bryan Crow, Jack Crow Jr., Mike Malcom, Mike Hicks and Lance Gulick. She was 79 years of age. Mary was born March 18, 1926, to Thomas and Ida (Brown) Rhatigan in Picher, Okla. She was a homemaker and lived in Treece most of her life. She married Fred McCoy on Feb. 12, 1946, and he preceded her in death on July 5, 1996. She is also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Marvin Rhatigan, Henry Rhatigan and Joe Rhatigan; and two sisters, Viola Leatherman and Ruth Wakefield. Survivors include five sons, Jimmy Lee McCoy and wife, Cheryl, of Tijeras, N.M., Pat McCoy and wife, Leslie, of Quapaw, Okla., Gary McCoy and wife, Gwen, of Treece, Mike McCoy and wife, Kathy, of Cardin, Okla., and Floyd McCoy and wife, Debi, of Quapaw; one sister, Louella Mitts, of Modesto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Charlie and Gertrude Simpson. Sue went home to be with the Lord in Hawaii on Feb. 2, 2006. On Nov. 25, 1967, she married Rev. Rex Robertson, current pastor of Christian Life Center in Joplin. Sue was a 1962 graduate of Marionville High School and Draughons Business College. Following their marriage, they traveled extensively as evangelists, then Sue and her husband served as pastor of churches in Neosho, Hawaii and most recently, in Joplin. Her devotion to her Christian faith was evident throughout her life, serving as District of Hawaii ladies president of the United Pentecostal Church International and many other key roles throughout her life. She also taught school for nine years in the Mililani Hawaii School District. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandchild, Seth Rodriguez. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1986. She married Dale Frazier on Feb. 14, 2004, in Joplin. He survives. Obituaries Published: Wednesday 2006/02-08 - Joplin Globe Jerome David Allen Jerome David Allen, our beloved caring, generous father and grandfather, passed away on Jan. 26, 2006, in Colorado Springs, Colo., due to complications from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Jerry was born on Nov. 28, 1938, in Joplin, Mo., to Thomas Jackson Allen and Edith Mary Peel. Jerry married his one true love, Elaine Gail Cartright in 1959. They were high school sweethearts and shared 41 years together before she passed away. They were once again together in eternity. He graduated from Raleigh School of Mines with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering in 1961. Jerry and Elaine moved to Tulsa in 1968. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1949; his father in 1991; his sister, Janice Rae Hammond in 1998; and his loving wife in 2000. Jerry is survived by his only son, David Jerome Allen; his grandson, Cole Thomas; and his granddaughter, Tayllor Donnell, all of Colorado Springs. Jerry moved to Colorado in November to spend more time with his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. He enjoyed the beautiful Colorado views from his new home. We cherish the laughs, the wonderful dinners and the holidays which we were able to share with him in that short time. Bates Webb CARTHAGE, Mo Wilma Lenore Bates Webb, a lifelong servant and volunteer in her community of Jasper County, died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at age 86, in Rogers, Ark. Mrs. Webb was born to Joseph and Bird Frost Bates on Jan. 26, 1920, in the Lakeside community, east of Carterville, Mo., and was a long time resident of Carthage. She married Thomas Elmo Webb April 13, 1941. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, of Carthage. She had a distinguished career working for the Jasper County Auditor, Spiva Art Center and the Missouri Highway Department. In 1975, Wilma was named the director of the first Tourist Information Center for the state of Missouri in Joplin. She was a model of civic activism and volunteerism as evidenced by her presidency of the Friends of Carthage Library, ABWA/Peace Star Chapter, Association of Retired Missouri State Employees (ARMSE) and Soroptomist. She also held offices in the Spiva Art Center, American Red Cross as well as lending her talents to promote Huck Finn Days, to support artists in the Local Artist Guild, and volunteering at McCune Brooks for the Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the DAR. Most importantly, Mrs. Webb was a loving wife and mother of three. She loved spending time with family, gardening and traveling. She devoted her life to the care and service of her fellowmen and the betterment of her community. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Thomas Elmo Webb. She is survived by three children, Mary Jo Denny and husband, Mike, of Rogers, Margaret Ford and husband, Dick, of Collinwood, Tenn., and Thomas Webb and wife, Nancy, of Tahuya, Wash.; one brother, Joseph Bates and wife, Macy, of Huntsville, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Hedge-Lewis Chapel in Webb City. His parents were Joseph and Najiba Mabel (Joseph) Abraham. He had lived in Galena all of his life. He obtained a BS degree in accounting in 1951, at Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan. He then entered the U.S. Army, serving from Oct. 16, 1952, through July 21, 1954. He had worked as a school teacher, both full-time and as a substitute teacher for the area schools. He and his wife owned and operated Wil-Mar Ready to Wear in Galena from 1965 to 1980. Recently he has been operating a lawn care service in Galena. He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church, Galena. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 9242, of Galena. Bill was married to Marjorie Murnane on Aug. 8, 1964, in Girard, Kan. Surviving beside his wife, Marge, of the home, are three daughters, Ann Abraham and Kathryn Abraham, both of Galena, and Teresa Graham (husband, Michael), Joplin, Mo.; one granddaughter, Kelly Jo Graham; one brother, George Abraham, Springfield, Mo.; two cousins, Joe Joseph, Kansas City, Mo., and Minnie Harry, Cleveland, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Fr. Joseph Abraham. A Rosary prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. For the first four years he played percussion in the Elite Marine Corps Band, playing for such dignitaries as the Queen of England and for John F. Kennedys Inauguration and funeral service. He served during the Vietnam War and at the time of his retirement had obtained the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He then drove a truck for several area truck lines, retiring in 2000. She survives. Ruth was also very active in many community organizations and activities including the Jasper Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, the BB Liners (Town & Country Club), 4-H and the Jasper County Farm Bureau. She held the honor of being the state chairperson of the womans committee for the Farm Bureau and helped the local chapter achieve many awards during her years of service. She was very proud of her farm heritage and worked many years alongside her husband, Howard. There will be a visitation with the family from 7 to 8 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church, east of Jasper, Mo., on Friday, Feb. 10. Mr. Watkins was born Sept. 19, 1943, in Joplin to the late Ishmael Watkins and Purnie Ellen Bresee Watkins and had lived in Joplin all of his life. He was self-employed and owned and operated a body shop and home moving business. He attended Lone Elm Pentecostal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Ginger and husband, Randy, Joplin; two brothers, Floyd J. Watkins and Leroy Watkins, both of Joplin; two sisters, Pearlene Curry, Seneca and Debra Huffman, Neosho; and two grandsons, Rece Ginger and Blake Ginger. He married Lujene Greene on June 18, 1987, in Savannah, Ga. He served as an emergency room physician for St. Johns Hospital, Springfield, Mo., retiring in 2000. He was board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He was a diplomate with the American College of Forensic Examiners and the American Board of Forensic Medicine. Bob was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Southwest City, to Earl and Mabel Covey Nichols. Joan was born on Aug. 17, 1932, in Galesburg, Kan., to Earl and Mae Locke. She graduated from Joplin High School in 1949 and attended Joplin Junior College. Joan married Jimmy W. Thomas on Aug. 17, 1956, in Joplin, Mo. He survives. Other survivors include her son, Steve Thomas and wife, Tammy; daughter, Traci Gross and husband, Chip. Grandchildren include Chancy Orem, Tyler and Micah Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Brady Locke; sisters, Marjorie Pappas, Earldine Key, Dorothy Hegarty and Bernadine French. Joan along with husband, Jimmy, founded the Thomas Insurance Agency (MFA, now Shelter Insurance) one week into their marriage. She was an active insurance agent for 50 years. Joan was an avid golfer and a member of Twin Hills and Loma Linda Country Clubs. At one time, she belonged to all of the area golf clubs. Her golf career started in the early 1950s in Puerto Rico, there she won the 1952 Puerto Rican Open. After returning to the Joplin area, she won the Club Championship at Schifferdecker in 1958, and continued to do so for a number of years. Joan won her first Twin Hills Club Championship in 1961. She has a record 29 Twin Hills Club Championships over a period of four decades. She set the womens course record at Twin Hills of a 71 in 1975. Joan played in the LPGA event, Southgate Open in Leawood, Kan. She also played in the Trans-Miss Tournament several times, an event for low handicap amateurs. In 1962, she won the Southeast Iowa Invitational. In 1963, Joan was awarded the Bernice Edlund award. This is given by the Missouri Womens Golf Association to a golfer who displays an ideal standard of golf during amateur events and exemplary sportsmanship. Joan won the Tri-State Women's Golf Tournament a record ten times, the first in 1957, and the last in 1987. This trophy was retired and given to Joan in 2002, since her name appeared on it more than any other. In 2000, Joan won the club championship at the Miles Grant Country Club in Stuart, Fla. Joan was the premier woman golfer in this area earning induction into the Joplin Golf Foundation Hall of Fame in 1981, induction into the Joplin Sports Authority Hall of Fame in 2002, and in 2004, she was inducted into the Ozark Golf Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mo. The highlight of Joans golf career was working with junior golfers and teaching them the fundamentals of the game. Dee Johnson, 77, of Pittsburg, died at 5:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Topeka, Kan., after suffering a stroke. She was born April 27, 1928, at Manhattan, Kan., the daughter of Roy and Helen Collister Currie, who farmed near Manhattan and later at Westmoreland, Kan. She was active in 4-H livestock projects as well as sports while growing up. She attended school in Manhattan, including two years at Kansas State University. On Feb. 6, 1949, she as united in marriage to Robert Bob Johnson at Manhattan. He survives at the family home. She started her nursing career in 1949, working as a nurses aid and nursing specialist at Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center for almost 40 years. Her tireless work and caring nature earned her the nickname Saint Kathleen from her colleagues. Membership was held in the First United Methodist Church, of Pittsburg. She most recently served as a volunteer for the area Meals on Wheels program. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening. Kathleen was a genuine, selfless person, who lived a truly Christian life. She touched many lives and had countless friends. She was a loving wife and mother, who made each son, daughter and grandchild feel special. She served as a positive role model to all. A coachs wife for 30 plus years, she could be found in the strands or with her ear to the radio cheering on Bobs basketball teams. She was an avid fan of the K-State Wildcats to the end - traveling to Manhattan to enjoy a double-header basketball game on Feb. 4. In addition to her husband she is survived by her children, Chris and wife, Carolyn Johnson, of Fort Smith, Ark., Eric and Mary Sue Johnson, of Webb City, Mo., and Russell Johnson, of Pittsburg, Ellen and husband, Dean Houghton, of Polo, Mo; and nine grandchildren, Kyle Johnson, of Washington D.C., Cory Johnson, of Fayetteville, Ark., Brett Johnson, of Fort Smith, Ark., Rachel Johnson, of Springfield, Mo., April Johnson, of Pittsburg, Hanna Wamser, of Winfield, Kan., Josie Wamser, of Admire, Kan., Brian Jones and Katie Jones, of Baldwin City. Kent was born July 14, 1947, in Joplin, Mo., the son of Thomas Edgar and Martha Hayden Harris and had lived in the area most of his life. He worked Internal Revenue Service and was a member of Racine Christian Church. Kent married Debra Sue Cook Jan. 22, 1971, in Seneca. She survives. Additional survivors include one son, Joshua Harris, Raeford, N.C.; one daughter, Brande Harris, Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, Drexel Harris, Joplin and Duane Harris, Springfield, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Jacob Ian Harris and Lucy Julianna Harris. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith Harris and Denzil Harris. Memorial services under the direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Racine Christian Church. Born Dec. 24, 1987, in Baxter Springs, Kan., she had lived in Joplin since 2003, moving from Carl Junction, Mo. She was employed at Academy Sports. A member of the Joplin High School senior class, she played first base on the girls softball team and wore No. 24. She had also played softball at Commerce, Okla., Baxter Springs and Carl Junction. She was a member of the Cardin, Okla., Baptist Church. (Jim) Rainey, of Columbus, Kan., was born Nov. 7, 1933, and died Feb. 14, 2006. James was born in Monett, Mo., to Frank and Nona (Garrison) Rainey, whom both have preceded him in death along with one brother, Leroy Rainey, killed in the Korean War in 1950. James was also a combat veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. He escorted his brothers body back from Seoul, Korea, to Carl Junction, Mo., where both will be buried. James went to school at Lowell, Riverton and Carl Junction. He lived in Columbus the past 40 years, 25 of which were spent running the Phillips 66 station at Four Corners, 10 miles south of Columbus. James is a lifetime member of the Joe Carter V.F.W. and a member of Keith Reeves American Legion, both of Columbus. James married Delores J. Gaston on June 21, 1951, at Bentonville, Ark. She preceded in death on Aug. 3, 1992. He is survived by their four children, Mike Rainey and his wife, Janey and Nick Rainey and his wife, Anne, both of Columbus; two daughters, Sherry Davis and husband, Rick, of Joplin and Susie McGonighie and husband, Larry, of Collinsville, Okla. He is also survived by one brother, John Rainey, of Joplin; three sisters, Mary Brown, of Lakeside, Mo., Rose Etta Fisher, of Seneca, Mo., and Sandra Spencer, of Carl Junction; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He married Barbara J. Freeman on Dec. 19, 1996. She survives of the home. He is also survived by one step son, Steve Meador, of Miami, Okla. He is also preceded in death by one step son, Arthur G. Meador; and one granddaughter, Baylee Dee Ann Bauer. Obituaries Published: Wednesday 2006/02-15 - Joplin Globe Claude (Max) Kennedy Claude (Max) Kennedy, age 93, Galena, Kan., died at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, Mo., following a sudden illness. Max was born May 22, 1912, at Galena. His parents were Claude and Hazel (Phillips) Kennedy. He had lived in Galena most of his life. He was married to Catherine (Petty), of Galena. She preceded him in death in 1991. They had two sons, Gary and Philip. He was a foundry pattern maker, carpenter and general contractor. In the late 1960s, he studied electronics and became a TV/radio technician. Kennedy TV Repair served the Galena area until hi retired in 1977. He was scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop for many years during the 1950s. Max and his wife, Catherine were long time active members of St. Marys Episcopal Church, of Galena. Surviving are sons, Gary and wife, Carol, of Galena and Philip and wife, Myonza, of Shell Knob, Mo.; a brother, Jack, of Pittsburg, Kan.; seven grandchildren include David Kennedy and wife, Lori, of Aztec, N.M., Cheryl White, of Durango, Colo., Russell Kennedy, Boston, Mass., Nancy Wray and husband, Thomas, Theodosia, Mo., Joyce Bush and husband, John, Camdenton, Mo., Mark Kennedy and wife, Kerri, Ridgedale, Mo., and Melissa Frye, Wyandotte, Okla.; 11 great-grandchildren, Lauren Stehle and husband, Tate, Kelly Carter, Tommy Carter, J.D. Several years ago he volunteered as a youth leader at the Christian Church in Cherryvale, Kan. He was married to Orpha May Hild on Oct. 7, 1937. She died April 23, 1981. He then married Mary Davis LaTurner on Sept. 30, 1984, in Crestline, Kan. She survives. He was born in Medford, Okla., June 29, 1924, to Roy Thomas and Fern Feese Ring. He moved to the Liberal area in 1942, marrying Violet Sprouls in Lamar, Mo., on Sept. 10, 1944. Vernon became a baptized believer and joined the First Baptist Church in Lamar in 1943. He was a mechanic and farmer and then worked for Hydro-Line in Pittsburg, Kan., as a water line superintendent, laying water lines in Kansas and Nebraska. In his retirement years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and raising cattle. Those who will mourn his passing are his wife, Violet, of 61 years of marriage; two sons and one daughter, Gary and Judy Ring, of Granby, Mo., Tim and Marsha Ring, of Liberal, and Joy and Neil Westervelt, of Iola, Kan.; one foster son, Robert Wallace, of Pittsburg; 11 grandchildren; five foster grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three special sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Shirley and Tom Cook, Vera Caruthers and LaVerne Sprouls, of Lamar; as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends. Lynn rejoiced in his love for his sisters, nieces, family and friends and enjoyed his life working with cattle. He was also a member of the Jasper Masonic Lodge, he was a lifetime member of the 32nd Scottish Rite, a member of the Abu Ben Adhem Shrine, Springfield, a graduate of two auction schools in Kansas City, Mo., and Fort Smith, Ark. Obituaries Published: Saturday 2006/02-18 - Joplin Globe Edwin Luther Orear Edwin Luther Orear, 84, Coffeyville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at his home in Coffeyville. Edwin L. (Ed) Orear was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to Rev. Errell H. Orear and Gwendolyn Ethel (Bowles) Orear. As a child he lived in various towns in southeast Missouri, going to school in Charleston, West Plains, Malden and Sikeston, Mo. Following high school he attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo. He enlisted in the navy and began naval aviation cadet training Feb. 3, 1943, graduating as a naval aviator Aug. 30, 1944. He served as an instructor in Instructors School at Rodd Field Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, until September of 1946. He was then assigned as a test pilot for the air maintenance unit at Cabaniss Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi. He was honorably discharged from the navy in June of 1947. He was with the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Kansas City, Mo., and Independence, Kan., until July 1, 1951. In July of 1951, he entered the insurance business as co-owner of McKnown and Orear Insurance and Real Estate Agency. In February of 1955, he moved to Coffeyville, Kan., as an agent for State Farm Insurance Companies and retired March 1, 1984. While in Coffeyville, Mr. Orear was a member of the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church, sang in the choir for 20 years and taught the Twigbenders Sunday School class for 20 years. He was a member of the United Way Board of directors three years, vice president of the Coffeyville Junior Chamber of Commerce, vice president of the Coffeyville at 100 Committee, member of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce Board of Commerce 1970-1971, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce doctors recruitment committee for 14 years, member of the board of directors of the Southeast Kansas Area Health Council for four years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center for five years and chairman of the board for three years. His passing at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., marked the end of many hospital stays during the past three years. Tony, as he preferred to be called, was born April 20, 1959, at Miami, Okla. He graduated from Miami High School with the class of 1977. He was active in youth sports. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Hawaii. Grady, of Washington, Mo., passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2006, at 5:50 a.m. at St. Johns Mercy Hospital in Washington, surrounded by her loved ones. She battled cancer for many months. She was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on Jan. 4, 1950, the daughter of the late John E. Grady and Lorene R. Grady. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elvis and Mamie Richards, of St. Joseph; along with Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Grady, of Huntsville, Ala. Becky graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph. Later, she obtained a bachelors degree in sociology from the University of Missouri. After a short career in social work, she graduated with a masters degree in library science from the University of Missouri. Her library career was at East Central College in Union, Mo., where she spent 17 years and helped start the ECC Friends of the Library. She also worked at the Joplin Public Library while living in Joplin and caring for her ailing mother. During her recent illness, Becky worked at the Jefferson-Franklin Community Action Corporation. Becky was a unique individualist with exquisite taste in her books, art and flowers. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed films, the Missouri River and especially loved her family and extended family of close friends. She is survived by her beloved 13 year old daughter, Katherine Grady, and her daughters father, Jeremy Holland, of Washington. She was the dear sister of Ritzy Stokesberry and brother-in-law, Charles Stokesberry, of Joplin, Mo.; along with being the dear aunt to John S. Johnston, of Joplin; and great-aunt to Savanna Hope Johnston, of Joplin, and Christian Triplett, of Anderson, Mo. Other survivors include nieces, Sally Kaster, of Olathe, Kan., and Sue Stokesberry, of Lancaster, Texas; and nephew, Scott Stokesberry, of Carterville, Ill., and Paducah, Ky. Her extended family of friends included Kate Edwards, Karen Barger, Lori Jost and many others from past and present. At Ms. Gradys request, her body will be cremated. Lori was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Feb. 17, 1964, to Mary (Guyll) Pflug and Joe Pflug. Lori is survived by her best friend and mother, Mary Pflug and second dad, Charles Tanner, of Weir, Kan.; her father, Joe Pflug and his wife, Glenda, of Joplin, Mo.; her loving sister, Jody Crim and her husband, Kelly Crim; and much beloved nephew, Cord Pflug, all of Fort Scott, Kan. Lori is blessed to have a very loving, supportive family and many special friends who will miss her very much. Lori pursued graduate studies at the University of Mississippi and at the University of Kansas. Lori was certified as an athletic trainer (ATC) in September of 1987, through the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). She was very active in both the Missouri and National Athletic Trainers Association, serving in a variety of positions over the years. During the 18 years tenure as an ATC, Lori was on the sports medicine staff of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), served as director of clinical education and assistant athletic trainer at Kansas State University and was a volunteer athletic trainer for the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Championship Events. He was a devoted Christian and ordained minister. He loved the Lord with all his heart and spread the love of Jesus to many people. He never met a stranger. He attended First Christian Church for many years and for the last nine years, attended the Highway Tabernacle in Cardin, Okla. He will be greatly missed by many. He was preceded in death by two wives, Etta Alene Jones Kirk in 1969 and Ellender Etta Helen Foote Kirk in April of 2005; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Kirk and Rosemary Stein; one great-grandson, C.D. Mr. Long was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Miami, Okla., to Theodore Alfred Long Sr. and Dellen Rosetta Duncan Long. In the early 1940s, Mr. Long drove a delivery truck for Joplin Vess Beverage Company. He was a heavy machine gunner in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, he recuperated at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. Although he dropped out of school after the eighth grade, Dr. Long went on to pass the G.E.D. and received his PhD. in Animal Nutrition at Oklahoma State University in 1956. He was a full professor at Pennsylvania State University and was a widely published authority on both animal nutrition and White Tail Deer. He retired in 1975, and moved to Seneca. Mr. Long was an avid hunter, gifted woodworker and skilled square dancer. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Anna May Reynolds Long. Additional survivors include daughter, Charlotte Long, York, Penn.; son, James Long, Seneca; sister, Dorcas Cameron, Joplin, Mo.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Art was born July 13, 1929, in Hockerville, Okla., to the late Rufus E. Legg and Sara Moss Legg and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life. He was in the floral business most of his life and owned and operated Art Leggs Flower and Wedding Chapel for over 28 years on North Main Street in Joplin. He served as past president of the Sertoma Club, past president of the Tri-State Floral Association, Ozark Florist Association, Missouri State Florist Association, NE-MO-KAN Association and was the district rep for F.T.D. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War and was a member of Empire Baptist Church. He married Thelma L. Vaughan on Sept. 22, 1955, in Miami, Okla. She survives at the home. Additional survivors include four daughters, Patty Inman and husband, Jim, Joplin, Jann Sage, Seattle, Wash., Karen Garren, Joplin and Terri Randall and husband, Chris, Indianapolis, Ind.; one son, Stephen Legg, Joplin; one brother, Ray Legg and wife, Fleta (Judy), Kansas City, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Harrington. Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Rev. Ron Dean will officiate. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Shaw, age 82, of Webb City, passed away at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at St. Johns Regional Medical Center following two years of ill health. Thora was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Delphos, Ohio. She had resided in Webb City for the last 45 years. She was saved when she was 26 years old and God lit a fire in her heart that burned until the day she died. She was a Christian counselor and ministered at Ozark Christian College, Revival Fires Ministries and Central Christian Center. She taught Christian ethics classes at Jubilee Christian School and Central Christian Academy. For 30 years she was the chaplain for the Jasper County Jail and was referred to as Mama Shaw. She received the Golden Eagle Award in 1996, from Messenger College. Over the years she was recognized by local, city, county, state and federal agencies for her contributions to humanity. She was recognized as President Bush's 689th Point of Light and met with the President in St. Louis, Mo. She was a member of Central Christian Center in Joplin and formerly taught Sunday School and was director of the Vacation Bible School Program. Thora married Rollin Shaw on Nov. 3, 1940, in Delphos. He preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1996. Survivors include one son, Gary Shaw and wife, Kathy; two daughters, Martha McCoy and husband, Roger and Patricia Schneller and husband, Dr. Joe, all of Joplin, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Central Christian Center with Dr. Hank Deslatte, Dr. Mack Evans and Boyce Mouton, ministers, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City. Pallbearers will be Mike Hulderman, Chris Cox, Brian Shaw, Donald Hames, Chuck Kelly and David Tucker. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. He was born to Fay and Ray Carey on Dec. 5, 1932, and grew up in California. As a tech rep for the USAF, he traveled worldwide, later worked for Hughes Corp., then as a licensed Real Estate agent/investor, headhunter and entrepreneur. He was Lions Club/Homeowners Association president, Mended Hearts member and proud owner of champion Labrador Retrievers that competed nationwide. His generosity, intelligence and focus on quality were unprecedented. Clay was an all around great man: caring, loving and an exceptional role model. He made his mark in world and changed peoples lives for the better. There was a small family gathering held in his honor February 8th through the 10th in Georgetown, Texas. He is survived by his wife, KC; son, Richard Carey; daughter, Tammy Case; and siblings, Charles Carey, Dennis Carey, Patrica Zickefoose, Sharon Oxford and Debbie Mertens. Obituaries Published: Wednesday 2006/02-22 - Joplin Globe Clyde Edgar Blundell Clyde Edgar Blundell, 83, of Chetopa, died at 2:47 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at Freeman West in Joplin, Mo. He had been in ill health, however, his death was unexpected. He was a life-long resident of Chetopa. He was born Sept. 5, 1922, the son of Emanuel and Florence (Snead) Blundell, of Chetopa. On Aug. 15, 1952, he was married to Georgia L. Stockwell at the Christian Church in Chetopa, by Rev. Rogers. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 1993. He worked at Buvinger Produce, Coopers Grocery, Reedy Grocery and KAAP. He retired in 1987, from the Kansas State Highway Commission where he had worked for 33 years. He was a World War II veteran, serving three years in the Pacific Theater in the Army. He received a honorary high school diploma in May of 2001. He was a member of First Baptist Church, of Chetopa, where he was a Sunday School director, a music director and a training union teacher. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 10508, of Chetopa. His hobby was mowing lawns. Survivors are one son, William Blundell and his wife, Donna, of Oswego; one daughter, Wanda Blundell, of the home; one sister, Betty Brady and her husband, Calvin, rural Chetopa; one brother, Floyd Blundell and wife, Sammie Jean, Enterprise, Miss.; one grandson, Cody Blundell and his wife, Sherry, of Miami, Okla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Karen and Joe Skerbetz, Carl Junction, Mo., Charles and Betty Jo Stockwell, Belton, Mo., Helen Marie and Dewayne Walker, Bartlesville, Okla., Jim and Dee Pierce, Welch, Okla., and Maxine Blundell, Chetopa; and several nieces and nephews. She had been ill for several months. Leona was born July 21, 1913, in Carol, Neb. She was a graduate of Hoover High School in Glendale, Calif. She was an avid bowler, having won many tournaments. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Glendale. She was associated with the Aetna Life Insurance Co., for 25 years and was instrumental in starting their medical division. She has been a Joplin resident for seven years. She married William L. Barry on Oct. 29, 1938 in Glendale. He survives. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Tommy Freeman officiating. Entombment will be in Ozark Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be David Gregory, Jackie Walker, David McAferty, Earl Knuth, Jeremy Knuth and Bob Preiss. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Rex was born on July 25, 1927, in Wilson County, N.C., the son of the late Benjamin and Monty Boykin. He served in the United States Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He married Betty Sue Corum on Oct. 30, 1951. Rex was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed spending time with his seven children. He was a member of the Mount Hope Church of Christ. He owned and operated Allied Heating and Air in Pittsburg, Kan., retiring in 1974. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 534. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Boykin, Joplin; four sons, Rex A. Boykin Jr. and wife, Vanessa, Kansas City, Mo., Mike Boykin and wife, Gina, Clearville, Pa., David Boykin and wife, Marinda, Grove, Okla., and Jason Boykin and wife, Desiree, Ozark, Mo.; three daughters, Deborah Crouch, Joplin, Teresa Haynes and husband, Tim, Duncanville, Texas, and Janet Deckard and husband, Mark, Springfield, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Lankford was a life long resident of the Seneca area and was known and respected as a Christian man. He was devoted to his family and found great pleasure in helping others. He especially enjoyed sharing his garden produce with family, friends and neighbors. Mr. Lankford was born Jan. 10, 1913, to William Leander and Nancy Jane Crabtree Lankford. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ada Lagers, Oleta McKibben, Nova McCullah McKibben and Ethel Rush; and four brothers, Perry, Lawrence, Corum and Basil. He was united in marriage on May 19, 1945, to Lena Mildred Leader. She passed away on June 4, 1990. Together they had four children, Patricia Ann, James Allan, Ronald Lester and Gary David, who passed away Oct. 6 1952. Mr. Lankford married Maggie Hutchison Roark on Nov. 7, 1991. She passed away on Oct. 29, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, Bobbie Roark; and one great-grandson. Mr. Lankford was engaged in farming and also worked as a laborer throughout his life. He retired from the Milnot Company in 1978. In recent years he had been a regular volunteer at the Cherokee Nation West Food Pantry in Seneca. He had been a member of the Church of Christ for over 75 years and attended the State Line Church of Christ west of Seneca. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Gayle West, of Seneca; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Dixie Lankford, of Neosho, and Ronald and Carolyn Lankford, of Webb City; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Janie Roark and Max and Cheryl Roark, all of Seneca; one sister, Retha Reynolds, of Neosho; eight grandchildren, Melissa Massey, Jason West, Diane Gonzales, Jamie Lankford, Dana Johnson, Jared Lankford, Christina Dickinson and Craig Lankford; and 11 great-grandchildren. Roger was born June 15, 1967, in Carthage, Mo. He was the son of Douglas Earl Price and Patricia Pauline Price, of Anderson, Mo. Roger owned R & B Mechanical Services, worked as a machinist for CNC Machine Products, Joplin, as the groundskeeper for St. Marys Catholic Church, Joplin, as a machinist for Cardinal Detecto Scale Manufacturing, Webb City, Mo., and for Sugar Creek Designs, Joplin. His first paying job was when he was in junior high school he worked at Pappys Arcade, Joplin. Roger was an avid fisherman. If you knew him at all you knew that he was at home with a fishing pole in his hand somewhere near the water. He also enjoyed all kinds of music, playing the guitar or piano while singing for his family and friends. As a young boy and teenager, he was a fervent boxer. He held a black belt in martial arts. He also enjoyed other sports such as baseball, football and chess. For many years he coached Little League baseball. Those closest to him knew of his liberal, charitable character to do things such as repair a leaky pipe for a friend or change a stranded strangers tire along the road. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Earl Price, on Sept. 25, 2004; a sister, Linda Marie Stephens, on Feb. 15, 2003; and a brother, Bobbie Jo Myers. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Ozark Funeral Home, 100 South Spring Street, Anderson. A memorial fund has been established for Mr. Price in care of Ozark Funeral Home, Anderson. Brittenham, 81, of Joplin, died at 4:20 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Freeman West Hospital after a lengthy illness. Monte was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Joplin, Mo., to Orrin N. Brittenham and Gertrude Dorsey Brittenham. He resided in Joplin his entire life. He attended Joplin schools and graduated in May 1942, from Joplin High School. He graduated from Stonier Graduate School of Banking-Rutgers University in 1966. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was executive vice-president at the former First National Bank and Trust, now US Bank of Joplin and vice-president and trust officer of Commerce Bank, of Joplin. He retired in June 1990, as credit manager at Tamko, Joplin. He married Audrey West on Dec. 27, 1947, in Joplin. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Gloria and Larry Sanborn and Glenda and David Austin, both of Joplin; three grandchildren, Barry Sanborn and his wife, Angela, of Joplin, Susan Austin, of Muskogee, Okla., and Scott Austin, of Joplin; one great-grandson, Isaac Harper, of Muskogee; two cousins, Dennis F. Dorsey and wife, Doris, of Atlantis, Fla., and Deanna Dorsey Campbell and husband, Gerry, of Lake Worth, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Norman Brittenham. A private graveside service will be conducted Saturday at Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Barry Sanborn, Scott Austin and David Austin. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Sanborn and Lore J. Olson. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary. Rev. Roger Nichols and Rev. Russell Standlee will officiate. Jack was employed by Kaiser Steel in Eagle Mountain, Calif., as a driller. He loved to fish and he could build or fix anything. Jack was married to Peggy Grimes on Sept. 10, 1949, in Quartzite, Ariz. She survives. A veritable ball of energy, he was always eager to take on the next project whatever it might be or tell you stories of his life in the "Corps", perhaps embellished just a little. He was a member of the 203rd Retirees Association and the Diamond Christian Church. He married Charlette Steinberg on Oct. 16, 1971, in Joplin. She survives.
