Joseph Carl Hester Merrill
JOPLIN, Mo. Joseph Carl Hester Merrill, age 18, 2001 Connecticut, died at 5:50 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003 from injuries received in a one vehicle accident.
Joseph was born Jan. 18, 1985 at Kansas City, Mo. He had lived in Joplin for the past few months, moving from Riverton. He was a 2003 graduate of Riverton High School where he was active in football, basketball and drama. He was currently attending Missouri Southern State University majoring in pre-business.
Surviving are his parents, Russ and Becky Merrill of Riverton, Kan.; four brothers, Josh Merrill and wife, Kim, Joplin, Mo., Ryan Merrill and wife, Lisa, Galena, Kan., Brandon and Timmy Merrill, both of the home at Riverton; his biological father, Danny Buffington; sister, Marlana Buffington, both of Frontenac, Kan.; grandparents, Bill and Patsy Sweeton, Riverton, Kan. He will also be missed by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Joseph will be missed by everyone for his quick smile, witty sense of humor and his long talks and visits.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003 at Riverton Friends Church, Riverton, Kan. Pastor Wes Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, Kan. Pallbearers will be Mark Kinsley, Ben DeBusk, Eric Matthew, Drew Matthew, Brad Ashe, David Wilkins, and Brandon Merrill. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund at Riverton High School.

Mazine R. Kitch
GALENA, Kan. Maxine R. Kitch, age 85, a retired Sears Roebuck employee passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at her home.
She was born July 29, 1918 at Baxter Springs, Kan. Her parents were John and Ogda Horn. She was married to Ollie I. Kitch in August, 1935 at Joplin, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 6, 1996; one sister, Irene Mosier; and one brother, Art Horn.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol (husband, Bill) Barnes, of the home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Rev. Jeff D. Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, Kan. under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

Mary Ann Abbey Lorenzen
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. Mary Ann Abbey Lorenzen, age 74, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at her home.
She was born Jan. 9, 1929 in Columbus, Kan. to Harry J. and Pearl S. Abbey. She was a graduate of Baxter Springs High School and received Degrees of Education from Pittsburg State College, Pittsburg, Kan. and Kansas University, Lawrence, Kan. She taught in the Johnson County Kan. school system from 1952 to 1955. Mrs. Lorenzen taught Special Education in the school district of Kansas City, Mo. from 1970 to 1993. She was a member of the Shawnee Presbyterian Church, Shawnee, Kan. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Kansas City Business Womens Assn., and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Lorenzen, Overland Park, Kan. and Leigh Lorenzen, Clearwater, Fla.; one brother, Harry (Jeff) Abbey, Redondo Beach, Calif.
Graveside services will be at 12 noon, Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, Kan. Her minister, Randy Odom will officiate. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. Monday until the funeral hour at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

Leila Tennis Hobson
TULSA, Okla. Leila W. Tennis Hobson, age 80, of Tulsa, died Thursday morning, Dec. 4, 2003 at a hospital in Little Rock, Ark. following an illness.
Leila was born March 11, 1923 at Cardin, Okla. Her parents were Dewey and Pearl Port. She had lived in Tulsa since 1972, after living most of her life in Galena, Kan.
She was an accomplished pianist. She was a member of Port City Missionary Baptist Church, Catussa, Okla. where she served as church pianist. She also played for the Gospel Quartet from Galena, Kan. for 27 years. She helped with church camp for several years in Saginaw, Mo. She was an excellent seamstress and did sewing from her home in Galena for several years.
She was married to Wade (Pete) Tennis Sept. 6, 1941. He died April 5, 1967. She later married Enos Hobson in October, 1972. He died in January, 1976.
Surviving are four grandchildren, DeNeene (Rick) Slominsky, OKallion, Ill., DeLeesa (Dewey) Walls, Dayton, Ohio, Wade (Carrie) Washom, Altus, Okla., and Thad (Carol) Tennis, Greenbrier, Ark.; her son-in-law, Harold Washom, Papillion, Neb.; her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Tennis, Galena, Kan. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Washom, June, 2000; one son, George Tennis, Aug, 2003; one sister, Rita Jett; and one brother, Phillip Port.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m, Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at First Baptist Church, Galena, Kan. Brother Ron Pugh will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, Kan. under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

Ray Lee Jones
Ray Lee Jones, age 70, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2003.
He was born on March 12, 1933 in Galena, Kan. He was a Korean War Veteran and resided most of his life in Tulsa, Okla. He is survived by one sister, Gaye Fiaf; one brother, John Jones; one daughter, Nancy Grillot; two grandson; two granddaughters; one nieces; two great-nieces; and a great-nephew.
The body will be at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.
Graveside rites will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Lowell Cemetery.

Betty Lou Wooten
RIVERTON, Kan. Betty Lou Wooten, age 78, died at 12:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, 2003 at a nursing home in Columbus, Kan. following an illness.
Betty was born August 17, 1925 in Quaker Valley, north of Riverton, Kan. Her parents were James G. and Cora G. (Link) Livingston. She had lived here all of her life. She graduated from Riverton High School in 1943. She was a member of Neutral Methodist Church, Neutral, Kan. the Magnolia Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Baxter Springs, Kan., and the Lady Elks, Galena, Kan. She also worked several years on the Cherokee County Election Board. Some of her special interests include Bingo, Ceramics and collecting baskets.
She was married to James D. Wooten on Jan. 6, 1944 at Baxter Springs, Kan. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Tom Wooten, Fort Smith, Ark. and Dan Wooten, Riverton, Kan.; two brothers, Bob Livingston, Riverton, Kan. and Paul Wayne Livingston, Kansas City, Kan.; 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Jack, and Jim Livingston. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7, 2003 at Quaker Valley Cemetery, Riverton, Kan. Rev. Bob King will officiate.

Paul E. Gandy
JOPLIN, Mo. Paul E. Gandy, age 66 passed away at 7:25 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 after a long illness.
Paul was born May 17, 1937 at Galena, Kan. His parents were Richard E. and Bertha Harvey Gandy.
He worked for Rio Grande Trucking Firm for 17 years in Denver, Colo. After a disability, he returned to Galena, Kan.
Survivors are a daughter, Diana Miller and husband, Scottie, Burbank, Calif.; two sons, Paul Mike Gandy and wife, Maryanne, Thornton, Colo. and Phillip Gandy and wife, Trish, Long Mont, Colo.; one brother, Rex Gandy, Galena, Kan.; and 3 grandchildren. The body was taken for cremation.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 3, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will be at Gandy Cemetery, west of Galena, Kan. The family will be at the home of Rex Gandy, Galena, Kan.

Dellena F. Scofield
GALENA, Kan. Dellena F. Scofield, age 62, 7844 Watermelon Lane, died at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at a hospital in Tulsa, Okla., following an illness.
Della was born July 6, 1941, at Baxter Springs, Kan. Her parents were Lawrence Evan and Ada (Bicknell) Brock. She was a lifelong resident of southeast Kansas. She was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith.
She was married to Richard Scofield on June 9, 1988, at Galena. He survives.
Additional survivors are two sons, Dan Ryan, Owasso, Okla., and Steve Titus, Galena; two stepchildren, Wayne Scofield, Webb City, Mo., and Traci Davis, Galena; one sister, Connie Comstock, Richmond, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Ryan; and one sister, Patty Porter. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Fr. Ah Maung Chrysostom will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Melvin K. Bo LaTurner
GALENA, Kan. Melvin K. Bo LaTurner, age 78, 5251 SW Highway Alternate 69, died at 10:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at a hospital in Joplin, following an illness.
He was born Sept. 12, 1925 in the Badger Community, north of Galena, Kan. His parents were Kay and Mamie (Abbott) LaTurner. He had lived in this area all of his life.
He worked as a welder at the Jayhawk Plant, Riverton, Kan., for several years. He was also a cattleman.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion, Columbus, Kan.
Bo married Lois A. Melton on June 29, 1987 at Miami, Okla. She survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Kenneth LaTurner, Springfield, Mo.; one daughter, Margaret Dent, Chanute, Kan.; three stepdaughters, Brenda Mallory, Riverton, Kan., Melody Wellman, Belle Plaine, Kan., and Shelly Abernathy, Riverton, Kan.; three sisters, Myrtle Welch, Thelma Boyes, and Allene Hallam, all of Galena, Kan.; two grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan. Mr. Roy Derfelt will be the eulogist.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

Ola Gleane Channel Killion
JOPLIN, Mo. Ola Gleane Channel Killion, age 77, died at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at a hospital in Joplin, MO following a brief illness.
Gleane was born Jan. 18, 1926 in the Badger Community, north of Galena, Kan. Her parents were George Ira and Pauline Eva (Ledford) Gourley. At the time of her death she was a resident of Joplin, where she had moved from Galena in 1998.
She was employed at St. Johns Regional Medical Center, Joplin as a dietician and cook for 37 years, retiring in 1999. She attended the Spring Grove Apostolic Faith Church in Galena. Gleane enjoyed traveling and was a member of TOPS in Joplin.
She was first married to Floyd Channel on May 22, 1941 at Galena. He died Feb. 12, 1989. She later married Cleo Killion on Aug. 14, 1999 in Joplin. He died Jan. 23, 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Bobby (wife, Brigitte) Channel, Springfield, Mo., and Billy (wife, Karen) Channel, Joplin; one daughter, Peggy Jean (husband, John) Webb, Holiday Island, Ark.; one stepson, Tony (wife, Judy) Killion, Joplin; three brothers, Joe Gourley and Jack Gourley, both of Galena, and Keith Gourley, Baxter Springs, Kan.; three sisters, Mary Collins and Peggy Bellamy, both of Galena, and Virginia Theel, Bunnell, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
One brother, Roy Gourley, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Rev. Howard Whitely will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of the son, Billy Channel, at 2708 Delaware, Joplin.

James G. Cram
GALENA, Kan. James G. Cram, age 67, 2620 Hickory Hills Road, died at 12:48 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at a local hospital in Joplin.
He was born Oct. 29, 1935 in Galena. His parents were Clyde and Lula (Collier) Cram. He graduated from Galena High School with the Class of 1953.
He returned to Galena in 1995 from Liberal, Kan., where he had lived for 18 years. He was a dispatcher for trucking companies, last working for Yellow Transit in Liberal. He also owned and operated Bargain Center II in Liberal for 9 years.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. His interests included antiques, reading and cooking.
He was married to Rayma L. Morton on March 1, 1956 at Galena. She survives.
Also surviving are five sons, James M. (wife, Ellen) Cram, Kansas City, Mo., Mark (wife Sandy) Cram, San Antonio, Texas, Darin (wife, Cindy) Cram, Parkville, Mo., Daryl (wife, Mary Ann) Cram, Augusta, Kan., and Duane (wife, Kelly) Cram, Riverton, Kan.; one sister, Betty Allen, Neosho, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Joshua, Kelly, Jay, Brad, Erica, Martin, Zachary, Lindsay, Chelsea, Makenzie, Ashley and Colby; and three great-grandchildren, Brittany, Ryan and Hunter.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Cram, and two sisters, Wilma Chester and Thelma Fanning.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Lowell Cemetery, Lowell, Kan. Rev. Wes Davis will officiate.

George Tennis
GALENA, Kan. Phillip George Tennis, age 57, 816 Euclid Street, died at 11:37 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at a hospital in Joplin, following an illness.
George was born August 1, 1946 in Galena. His parents were Wade Ernest (Pete) and Leila W. (Port) Tennis. He had lived in Galena all of his life. He graduated from Galena High School in 1964.
He was a carpenter. He worked for several years at Floyd Wades Pattern Shop in Joplin. He retired as the financial secretary of Carpenters Local No. 311 in Joplin, a position he held for 11 years.
He served as song leader at First Baptist Church, Galena, Kan. for 19 years. He was charter member of Grace Baptist Church, Joplin, where he served as song leader since June, 1986. He had been a coach at the Galena Little League. He sang tenor with the Gospelaires Quartet for 15 years. He also played bass guitar and sang with Cactus Jack.
George was married to Marilyn L. Martin on March 1, 1968 at Joplin, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Thad (wife, Carol) Tennis, Greenbrier, Ark.; his mother, Leila Tennis Hobson, Tulsa, Okla.; and two granddaughters, Ashley and Jessica Tennis. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Washom.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at First Baptist Church, Galena, Kan. Rev. Frank Martin, Rev. Fred Vogel and Rev. Ron Pugh will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan.

Neda Irene Card
GALENA, Kan. Neda Irene Card, age 90, of Galena, died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Galena Nursing Center, Galena, Kan., following an illness.
She was born June 5, 1913 at Cave Springs, Mo. She returned back to Galena four years ago, moving from Coffeyville, Kan. Prior to that, she had lived in Pineville, Mo.
As a young girl, she worked at Rabel's Candy Company and the Cigar Factory in Galena, Kan. During her marriage, she and her husband owned and operated Lynch Service Station in Galena for several years.
She was currently a member of the Lowell Friends Church, Lowell, Kan. She used to be active in the Spring Grove Apostolic Faith Church in Galena, where she taught the youth group.
She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, the DAV Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a 50-year member of the Amy Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Galena, Kan. She also held dual membership in the Coffeyville Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Azrim Temple, Pittsburg, Kan, and had been active in the Ruth Rebekah Lodge when it was in Galena.
Her hobbies included flower gardening, fishing and family.
She was married to Glen Lynch in 1946. He preceded her in death July 7, 1970. She later married Everett Melvin Card on Dec. 18, 1981, at Miami, Okla. He survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Joanne Gould, Galena, Kan; six grandchildren, Lisa Eisele, James M. Spriggs, Lynette Hernandez, Valerie Lake, Sabrina Crawford and Randy Baker; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Fred Andrew Crawford Sr. and John N. Crawford; and one grandson, Fred Andrew Crawford Jr.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Cemetery, Joplin.
An Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the funeral home. The family will receive friends following the service until 8 p.m.

Dorothy Turley Hopkins
GALENA, Kan. Dorothy Helen Turley Hopkins, 67, 1720 S. Wood St., died at 4:50 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at a hospital in Joplin, Mo. following an illness.
Dot was born Sept. 26, 1935 at Sapulpa, Okla. She had lived in Galena for the past 37 years, moving from Joplin, Mo. She was a homemaker.
She was married to John Turley on May 21, 1955. He preceded her in death. She later married Tom Hopkins who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are three sons, Tom and wife, Dixie Turley, Albuquerque, N.M., Jimmy and wife, Juanita Turley, Galena, Kan., and Randy and wife, Kelly Turley; three daughters, Lena Sumpter, Galena, Kan., Patsy and husband, Brett Wagner, Riverton, Kan. and Tammy and husband, Troy Honeywell, Wichita, Kan.; and four step-daughters, Jeannie Cox, Susie Huffman, and Gale Conrad all of Galena, Kan. and Brenda Hayes, Baxter Springs, Kan.; 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

George Keith Savage
RIVERTON, Kan. George Keith Savage, age 61, 5350 SE Boston Mills Road, Galena, Kan., died suddenly Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Osage Beach Resort, Truman Lake, near Warsaw, Mo.
George was born Aug. 17, 1942, at Valentine, Neb. His parents were Robert W. and Ellen M. (Wamack) Savage. He had lived in Riverton for the past 37 years.
George worked six years doing custodial work for the Riverton School System. He then started working for Doane's Feed Products, Galena, Kan., where he worked for 17 years. He and his wife owned and operated G & L Pools and Car Wash, Riverton, for the past 10 years. They also owned and operated Riverton Quik Stop for the past three years. He was very civic minded. For several years he was the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 20, Riverton. He had served on the Riverton School Board from 1982 to 1984. For the past seven years, he has been a board member of the Cherokee County Rural Water District No. 7, Riverton.
He spearheaded and co-chaired the construction of the new Riverton Community Center and Fire Station. For his contribution on this project, he received special recognition and was a Grand Marshall of the Galena Birthday Celebration last June.
His interests included fishing and hunting. He had also participated in area fast pitch softball tournaments in years past.
George was married to Linda Jean Canady on Aug. 4, 1961 at Galena, Kan. She survives. Additional survivors include one son, Keith Savage, Carl Junction, Mo.; one daughter, Kerri Culley, Riverton, Kan.; two brothers, Fred Savage, Conway, Mo., and Jack Savage, Nixa, Mo.; one sister, Florence Jordan, Nixa, Mo.; five grandchildren, Ashley Savage, Tison Culley, Aaron Savage, Isaac Culley and Amber Davidson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at the Riverton High School Fieldhouse. Rev. Audie Tash and Rev. Wes Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Quaker Valley Cemetery, Riverton, Kan.
Pallbearers will be Fred Shallenburger, Larry Weak, Paul Plymell, Ronnie Warner, Robert Savage, Freddie Savage, Don Hedrick and Bill Hall. Honorary pallbearers are Bud Watson and Charley Rogers.

Idona A. Martin
GALENA, Kan. Idona A. Martin, age 84, 2117 Short Street, died at 5:05 pm, Thursday, July 17, 2003 at a hospital in Joplin, Mo.
Idona was born Sept. 18, 1918 in Newton County, Mo. Her parents were Frank and Florence (Toppings) Shrock. She had lived in Galena all of her life. She worked for 30 years at King Louis Shirt Factory, Baxter Springs, Kan. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Galena, Kan. where she was involved in the Womans Club. She worked for several years on the Election Board in Galena, Kan.
Idona was married to Orbia W. Martin on Jan. 10, 1936 at Joplin, Mo. He preceded her in death Dec. 9, 1985.
Surviving are three sons, Frank Martin, Galena, Kan., Sam (wife, Judy) Martin, Columbus, Kan. and Jerry (wife, Judy) Martin, OFallon, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Barbara Ann Harding
Barbara Ann Harding, age 59, 1009 North Henning, Galena, Kan., died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at her home, following an illness.
Barbara was born Dec. 1, 1943 at Joplin. Her parents were Roger and Edith (Barnes) Brown. She moved to Galena 30 years ago from Wichita, Kan.
She last worked at Employer Advantage, Joplin. She was a past Boy Scout Den Mother and was active with the Little League Baseball and Pee Wee Football programs. She had been the supervising judge of Ward 5 on the Galena Election Board. Her interests included crocheting and gardening.
Barbara was married to Loren S. Harding, Dec. 23, 1960 at Miami, Okla. He survives. Additional survivors include three sons, Loren G. (wife, Joni) Harding and William L. (wife, Jennifer) Harding, both of Galena, and James R. Harding and his fianc, Shelly Clark, both of Fort Smith, Ark.; one brother, Roger Brown, Mount Vernon, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Spencer Harding, Rachel Harding and Samuel Harding.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Endicott.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena.

Donald H. Kitch
Donald H. Kitch, age 84, 1001 Galena Avenue, Galena, Kan., died at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at a Galena nursing home. Donald was born Dec. 17, 1918 at Galena. His parents were Jess and Lillie (Hobson) Kitch.
He graduated from Galena High School in 1935. Donald was a heavy equipment operator working for L. E. Wiles, and later the Quapaw Company, both in Baxter Springs, Kan. He then worked for Ponatoc Road Co. in Ponatoc County, Okla. He then became co-owner of the Cherokee Paving Co. of Ada, Okla.
He was married to Mary Jo Honeywell in November, 1946 in Columbus, Kan. She died Jan. 21, 2002.
Surviving is one daughter, Terri Dawn Kitch, of the home.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Jo Kitch; and six brothers, Ollie Kitch, William Kitch, Jess Kitch Jr., Lloyd Kitch, Darrell Kitch and Bob Kitch.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. Mr. Roy Derfelt will be the eulogist. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.

Sondra Kay Bowman
GALENA, Kan. Sondra Kay Bowman, age 62, 1804 E 13th St. Galena, Kan. died at 2:55 am, Monday, June 23, 2003, at a local hospital in Joplin, Mo. following an illness.
Kay was born October 18, 1940 at Joplin, Mo. Her parents were Royal and Velma (Harreld) Stewart. She was a lifetime resident of Galena.
After graduating from Galena High School, she attended Central Bible College, Springfield, Mo. She later received certification as a Respiratory Therapist at State Fair Community College. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse through Franklin Tech, Joplin, Mo. She worked for 12 years at St Johns Hospital, Joplin, Mo. Her last employment was at McCune Brooks Hospital, Carthage, Mo. where she worked for 5 years.
She was a member of the Galena Assembly of God, Galena, Kan. She had traveled to Brooklyn, N.Y. to help with Teen Challenge Ministries for a period of time.
Sondra Kay was united in marriage April 23, 1965 at James A. Bowman at Miami, Okla. He survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Chad and wife, Leslie Bowman, Carl Junction, Mo.; one daughter Jodi Bowman, Galena, Kan.; her parents, Royal and Velma Stewart, Galena, Kan.; one brother, Skip Stewart, Galena, Kan.; one sister, Carolyn Billingsley, Joplin, Mo.; and 4 grandchildren, Alicia Phillips, Destry Allgood, Laura Allgood, and Elise Brett Bowman.
One son, Brett Bowman preceded her in death Aug. 8, 1996.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 26, 2003 at the Galena Assembly of God. Pastor Jim Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan. James "Jim" A. Looman
James "Jim" A. Looman, age 54, 202 Chitwood, Carl Junction, Mo., died at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at a local hospital, following an illness.
Jim was born Feb. 6, 1949 at Little Falls, N.Y. His parents were Ralph and Madline (Schuyler) Looman. He had lived in Carl Junction for the past five years, moving from the state of Washington.
He was a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Galena Assembly of God, Galena, Kan. He and his wife were active in the Mission America Placement Service (MAPS) ministry.
Jim was married to Sharron Kay Brooks on July 19, 1986 at Umatilla, Ore. She survives.
Additional survivors include one son, James Scott Looman, Umatilla, Ore.; four daughters, Amy (husband, Naio) Sainez, Hermiston, Ore., Becky (husband, Jose) Landarverde, Omaha, Neb., Shawna (husband, Randy) Bedford, Haskell, Okla., and Brenda (husband, Glenn) Schuh, Portland, Ore.; one brother, Ronald Colegrove, The Dalles, Ore.; one sister, Sharon Dudley, Oaks, N.D.; and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Galena Assembly of God, Galena, Kan. Pastor Jim Jones and Bro. Leon Thomas will officiate. The body will be taken for cremation with burial at the National Cemetery, Springfield, Mo., at a later date.

Muriel Mosier, age 90, 106 North Cambridge, Carl Junction, Mo., a former waitress and homemaker, died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at a local hospital.
Born Sept. 30, 1913 in New York City, her parents were Eli and Jenny (Finley) Decker. She had lived in Carl Junction since 1976, moving from Los Angeles, Calif.
She was a waitress from 1945 to 1963 while living in California. She also worked three years as a nurse's aide at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles. She was a member of First Christian Church, Galena, Kan.
She was married to Harrison Mosier on April 27, 1962 at Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death March 16, 1988.
Surviving is her son, William Barton, Portland, Maine.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Boyce Mouton will officiate. Burial will be in Quaker Valley Cemetery, Riverton, Kan.

GALENA, Kan. - Dorothy Lou "Dottie" Peek, age 75, 1217 Kellar, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at her home, following a long illness.
Dottie was born Dec. 5, 1927 at Galena. Her parents were Macel Allen and Gertrude Mae (Macom) Peek. She had lived in Galena all of her life.
She was a graduate of Joplin Business College. She worked several years in the Surgical Supply Department at Freeman Hospital, Joplin. She attended First Baptist Church, Galena. She was listed as a member of the Cherokee Indian Tribe.
Her closest survivor is an aunt, Gladys Card, Riverton, Kan. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one aunt, Peggy Martin; and one uncle, Henry Nausley.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2003, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Rev. Dave Robinson will officiate. Bob Shears will be the Eulogist. GALENA, Kan - Jean Watkins, age 62, 1329 Elm Street, died at 7:20 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, at her home, following an illness.
Jean was born June 12, 1940 at Galena. Her parents were Leo B. and Ida Mae (Rogers) Watkins. She had lived here all of her life.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Galena, The Galena Women's Club, Women of Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at the Galena Senior Citizens Center. Her interests included Bingo and card playing.
Surviving are three brothers, Jerry Watkins and Ted Watkins, both of Galena, and Bob Watkins, Lowell, Kan.; four sisters, Mary Jo Williams, Joplin, Betty McQuillen, Jane Sturgis and Doris Adams Scott, all of Galena; 27 nieces and nephews and 78 great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Watkins and Jack Watkins.

Harold E. Gilstrap
GALENA, Kan. - Harold E. Gilstrap, age 67, died at 9:35 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2003, from injuries he received in an auto accident one mile south of Galena on Highway 26.
Harold was born Jan. 12, 1936 at Galena. His parents were Finis E. and Lillie May (Brookens) Gilstrap. He was a lifetime resident of Galena. He graduated from Galena High School in 1954. He worked over 30 years at Teledyne, Joplin, retiring in 1991. He owned and operated Gilstrap Sheet Metal for 35 years. His interests included his grandkids, and he was a staunch Kansas University fan. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena. Harold served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.
He was married to Judith Ann Kinion on June 1, 1958 at Galena.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Judy, is one son, Brent (wife, Holly) Gilstrap, Springfield, Mo.; one daughter, Candy L. (husband, Gary) Henson, Galena; five grandchildren, Mike Henson, Chandee Henson, Sunny Henson, Jackson Gilstrap and Canaan Gilstrap; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica Henson, Ethan Henson and Deacon Henson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.

Paul Edward Gust
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Paul Edward Gust, 81, 1602 South Estate Ave., died at 1:15 a.m. at a hospital in Springfield, Mo. following an illness.
Mr. Gust was born June 29, 1921 at Columbus, Kan. His parents were Emmett and Hilda (Gibson) Gust. He had lived in Springfield since 1970, moving from Columbus, Kan.
He was of the Columbus High School class of 1938. He worked as a farmer for several years, and then began driving for Consolidated Freightways. During his driving career, he received the Million Mile No Accident Award. He retired in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. His interest included gardening, fishing, camping and any activity with the grandchildren.
He was married to Betty Jean Shaw on May 29, 1942 at Columbus, Kan. She survives.

Charles Hunter Ross Jr.
and Phyllis Viola Ross
GALENA, Kan. - Charles Hunter Ross and his wife, Phyllis Viola Ross died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at their home 10374 Southeast Badger Road, north of Galena. They were victims of a Tornado that swept across the area.
Charles was born Oct. 19, 1922 north of Galena. His parents were Charles H. and Ruth (Williams) Ross Sr. He was a lifetime resident. He was a self-employed farmer and had worked 30 years at Vicker's Inc., Joplin, Mo., retiring in 1982. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a member of the American Legion.
Phyllis was born July 20, 1929 at Goodman, Mo. Her parents were Theodore Roosevelt and Florence Viola (Ault) Fry. At age one she had moved to Seneca, Mo., but she had lived here most of her life. She had worked as a seamstress at Elder's Shirt Factory in Carl Junction and Webb City, Mo. for 18 years, retiring in 1987.
Charles and Phyllis were married June 30, 1950 at Bentonville, Ark.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Viola Mitchell, and Lula May Judy, both of rural Galena, Kan. and Janet Ruth Guinn, Greenfield, Mo.; seven grandchildren: and 8 great-grandchildren. Charles is also survived by one brother, Vernon L. Ross, Columbus, Kan.: and one sister, Lutetia Lovell, rural Galena, Kan.
Phyllis is also survived by one brother, John Fry, Valley Center, Kan.; and one sister, Erma Hager, Joplin, Mo.
Graveside services will be at 10 Thursday, May 8, 2003 at Messer Cemetery, north of Galena, Kan. Rev. Audie Tash will officiate. The caskets will remain closed. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army.

She worked at Meeker Leather Co, Joplin, Mo. from 1965- 1981. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher. Her interests included sewing and bowling. She was very family oriented.
She married Leonard C. Morris Aug. 11, 1940 at Joplin. He survives.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving is one son, Jeffrey L. (wife, Jo Ann) Morris, Columbus, Kan.; one daughter, Susan E. (husband, Michael) Thomas, Temple, Texas; one brother, Ray Ryan, Galena; five grandchildren, DeAnna Crismas, Davis Morris, Jeff Thomas, Elizabeth Finkendbinder and Carolyn Anderson; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Langford and Rema Moody.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, at First Baptist Church, Galena. Pastor Rodney Castleberry will officiate. Pallbearers will be Steve Hall, David Ryan, Kirk Qualls, David Morris, Dane Crismas, Jeff Thomas and Daymon McCorkle. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Hall, Steve Langford, Gene Russell, Tom Hancock, Gary McCorkle and Cliff Wilder.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.

Skyler Matthew Haase
GALENA, Kan. - Skyler Matthew Haase, six day old infant son of Joshua Haase and Tiana Davis of Joplin Mo., died at a hospital in St. Louis, Mo., Saturday morning, April 5, 2003.
Skyler was born March 31, 2003 at Joplin, Mo.
Besides his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Steve Davis, Joplin, Mo., and Tammy Davis, Greeley, Colo.; paternal grandparents, Julie Haase, Galena, Kan., and Mike Haase, Alba, Mo.; maternal great-grandparents, John and Sharon Davis, Galena, Kan.; great-great-grandmothers, Dorthea Davis and June Shaw, both of Galena, Kan. and Genny Kauffman, Greeley, Colo.; 2 aunts, 2 uncles, and many other relatives.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan.

Arthur T. Chaddock
GALENA, Kan. - Arthur T. Chaddock, age 55, 504 Schermerhorn Rd, died Saturday, March 22, 2003 at his home.
Art was born Dec. 9, 1947 at Rochester, Minn. His parents were Wilmur and Helen (Oviatt) Chaddock. He had lived in the Joplin, Mo. and Galena, Kan. area most of his life. He was a construction worker, and had last worked for Ceilings and Walls, Joplin, Mo. He was a veteran of the US Army serving between 1966 and 1969. He was a member of the Galena Elks Lodge, Galena, Kan. His interests included fishing and playing pool.
He was married to Gay Hart April 6, 1996 at Miami, Okla. She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Tracy Chaddock, Galena, Kan., Wendy Chaddock, State of California, and Misty and her husband, Calvin Carrico, Joplin, Mo.; 6 grandchildren, Jessica Brownfield, Christopher Davis, Dakota Carrico, Jacob Tieso, Alanna Tieso, and Parker LaTurner; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters. In addition to his parents, one brother preceded him in death.
The body has been cremated. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate.

John A. Charles Sr.
Galena, Kan. - John A. Charles Sr., age 66, 7500 Southeast 85th Street, died at midnight, Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at a local hospital in Joplin, following an illness.
John was born Nov. 13, 1936 at Kiowa, Kan. His parents were Lewis and Edith (Coberley) Charles. He returned to Galena four years ago after living 32 years in San Fernando, Calif.
He worked for Alcorn Fence for 23 years in California. He was veteran of the Korean War, serving the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. His hobby was fishing.
John was married to June Karr Hendryx on July 23, 1962 at Bentonville, Ark. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, John A Charles Jr, Chelsea, Okla.; two daughters, Laura Charles and Julie (husband, Melvin) Hendryx, both of Galena, Kan.; three brothers, Jesse (wife, Louise) Charles, Baxter Springs, Kan., Billy Jo (wife, Janice) Charles and James (wife, Sharon) Charles, both of Galena, Kan.; one sister, Irene (husband, Forest) McCool, Galena, Kan.; one grandson, James Hagmann, Rialto, Calif.; and four honorary grandchildren, Porsche, Lexi, Curtis and Tyler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Charles (1975) and one sister, Letha Charles (1945).
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Rev. Richard Nichols will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, north of Baxter Springs, Kan. Veterans' graveside rites will be conducted by the Northeast Oklahoma Veterans Funeral Detail.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Charles, Kelvin Charles, James Charles, Jerry Charles, Robert Allen and Mark McCool.

GALENA, Kan. - Burt Edward Horner, age 36, 800 1/2 Euclid, Galena, Kan. died Wednesday evening, March 12, 2003 at his home.
Burt was born Sept. 6, 1966 in Columbus, Kan. He had lived in Galena all of his life. He was a member of the Galena Assembly of God Church. He had worked as an operator for Farmer's Chemical Co., Joplin, Mo.
He was married to Julie Malin on Feb. 8, 2003 at Galena, Kan. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Hunter, Michael and Coltin; three daughters, Aisha, Jessica and Courtney; mother, Pat Isley, Galena, Kan.; mother-in-law, Arminta Malin, Carl Junction, Mo.; grandmother, Helen McCullum, Galena, Kan.; brother, Bobby (wife, Robin) Horner, Joplin, Mo.; stepbrother, Jerry (wife, Eva) Isley, Galena, Kan.; many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends.

David Lee Richardson Sr.
GALENA, Kan - David Lee Richardson Sr, age 47, 3011 South Wood Street, died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Richardson was born March 1, 1956 at Joplin, Mo. His parents were Burl and Marion (LaMarr) Richardson. He had lived in the Joplin area all of his life.
He worked as a leadman at Bagcraft Manufacturing, Baxter Springs, Kan., where he had been employed since 1980. His favorite pastime was raising cattle. He was a loving father, loving husband and a generous friend.
David was married to Teresa Gale Douglas, March 30, 1974 at Galena, Kan. She survives.
Also surviving is one son, David L. Richardson Jr., Galena, Kan.; three daughters, Nerissa (husband, Mathew) Maki, Galena, Kan., Jennifer Richardson, Joplin, Mo., and Karen (husband, Isaac) Barringer, Carl Junction, Mo.; three grandchildren, Trenton Richardson, Hunter Maki and Nina Maki; and six siblings, including one close brother, Lester Richardson, Sauk City, Wis.
The body has been cremated. A private memorial service was held by his family on Wednesday, March 12, 2003. Arrangements were under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

Dorothy D. Shaw
JOPLIN, Mo. - Dorothy D. Shaw, age 71, 7290 West Evergreen Lane, passed away Sunday morning, March 9, 2003 at her home.
Dorothy was born Aug. 9, 1931 at Galena, Kan. Her parents were Roy and Maude (Merrill) Pigg. She had lived in the Joplin Mo. - Galena, Kan. area all of her life.
She was married to Gale Leon Shaw on Dec. 25, 1948 at Columbus, Kan. He died Aug. 5, 2000.
She was a pastor's wife, sharing in her husband's ministry as he pastored West Side Full Gospel Church, Webb City, Mo. for 20 years, resigning in 1998. She currently attended the Joplin Full Gospel Church.
Surviving are two sons, Sandy Shaw and wife Doyla, Neosho, Mo., and Dave Shaw and wife Sherry, Joplin, Mo.; one daughter, Vicki Hensley and husband Mike, Carl Junction, Mo.; and one sister Betty Karr, Baxter Springs, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, one daughter preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan. Pastor John Myers will officiate.

Darlene Marie Phalen
RIVERTON, Kan. - Darlene Marie Phalen, age 82, 6251 South Vark Road, died at 12:25 p.m., Friday, February 28, 2003 at Galena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Galena, Kan., following an illness.
Darlene was born Sept. 8, 1920 at Mulberry, Kan. Her parents were Allen Jackson and Flossie Belle (Haggard) Moody. She had lived in the Riverton area since 1955.
She was a homemaker. She had worked at Pacific Mercury Inc. in Joplin, Mo., from 1955 to 1960. She was also an Avon lady. She was a member of the Riverton Friends Church.
Darlene was married to Glenn A. Phalen Sept. 11, 1941 in Detroit, Mich. He died June 8, 2000.
Surviving are four children, Glenna Darlene Spiva, Galena, Kan., Dennis Roy Phalen, Birmingham, Ala., Karen Joy Tennenbaum, state of Missouri, and Allen William Phalen, Riverton, Kan.; two sisters, Pauline Scott, Fort Scott, Kan., and Melba Conner, Lawrence, Kan.; four grandchildren, Diane Fitzer, Eric Walton, Ryan Phalen, and Stephanie Tennenbaum; and two great-grandchildren, Heather and Krysta Fitzer.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003 at Lowell Cemetery, Galena, Kan. Pastor Jim Jones will officiate.

Anne Thompson
GALENA, Kan. - Elizabeth Anne Thompson, age 78, went to be with the Lord at 9:05 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at a local hospital in Joplin, Mo.
Anne was born Sept. 26, 1924 at Galena, Kan. Her parents were the late Clyde W. and Mary Etta (Boswell) Jones. She was raised in Galena and returned here in November, 1996 after living in Torrance, Calif.
At Torrance, she worked as manager of a large storage facility for 12 years. She retired as a chiropractor's assistant after eight years of practice.
She was known as a teacher of public speaking. Her interests included painting, square dancing and participating in church functions. She was very civic minded and was always available to volunteer to help with countless community projects.
She was a member of the Galena Assembly of God Church, Galena, Kan., the Galena Chamber of Commerce, where she served as secretary-treasurer from 1996-98, the Amy Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Galena, Kan., and was past secretary of the Galena, Kan. chapter of the AARP.
She was married to Charles Howard Thompson on July 2, 1942 at Las Vegas, Nev. He died March 29, 1970.
Surviving is one daughter, Lynne (husband, Darcy) Hardman, Galena, Kan.; one sister, Jane Meriwether, St. Joseph, Mo.; two grandchildren, Charles Howard Hardman, Columbus, Kan., and Bree Anne Hardman, Galena, Kan.; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Hardman, Alexandra Hardman and McKayla Hart.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Jones and Bob Jones.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Pastor Jim Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, Kan. Funeral rites will be conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star.
Pallbearers will be Charles Howard Hardman, Ben Biddle, Eric Bellamy, John Meriwether, Jack Meriwether, Tyler Hardman and Greg Anthony. Honorary pallbearers will be David Hall and Clyde Jones.

Georgia C. Coble
GALENA, Kan. - Georgia C. Coble, age 60, 505 East 23rd Street, died at 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at a local hospital, following a long illness.
Georgia was born July 4, 1942 at Galena. Her parents were Claude and Helen Lucille (Saggert) Burress. With the exception of a short time in California, she had lived in the area all of her life.
She worked as a school crossing guard the Galena Schools, last working in May, 2002. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena. Included in her special interests were playing cards and attending her grandchildren's activities.
Georgia was married to Robert Coble on June 12, 1960 at Galena, Kan. He survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Bobby (wife, Janey) Coble and Jimmy Coble and two daughters, Alice (husband, Robert) Matthews and Patty (husband, Kelly) Watson, all of Galena; one brother, James Burress, Red Cloud, Neb.; one sister, Kathy Barnett, Joplin, Mo.; and seven grandchildren, Jeremy Matthews, Michael Matthews, Kyle Matthews, Kelli Coble, Matthew Coble, Kelsie Watson and Stephanie Watson.
One sister, Geraldine Gilbert, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at First Baptist Church, Galena. Pastor Rodney Castleberry will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.

Leslie Leonard
Leslie (Bliss) Leonard, 94, died January 24, 2003 in La Crosse, Wis., where she had gone to live with her daughter Audrey Penner and son-in-law Wayne Arihood several year ago.
Leslie was born July 27, 1908 in Galena, Kan. She was the first daughter born to Barney and Audrey (Poole) Bliss. She and her four sisters recounted many happy stories of family adventures during their growing up years in Galena. They especially loved Grandma Awilda "Molly" Horn and Grandma Nettie Poole.
After graduation from Galena High School, Leslie attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas for two years. Later she obtained her Bachelors degree from Oklahoma A&M and her Masters degree from Kansas State at Pittsburg. She began her teaching career in 1928 in Galena in a one room school called Hickory Grove, often riding her bicycle to school. Leslie taught in Bixby, Okla., where she had 60 children in a one room school. She also taught at Liberty, Spring Grove, Galena High School and in Adams County, Colo., before her retirement in 1974. She was a much loved mentor and friend to her many students.
Leslie married Hal Chesler Leonard in Galena on Aug. 20, 1935. They spent their first years together living on a farm near Bixby, Oklahoma where she learned to gather eggs and churn butter. The Leonards loved to fish from Salmon in Idaho to trout in the Colorado mountains to crappie in Spring River, they tried their luck, usually successfully. They had wonderful years in the Denver area where they hung out with Ann and Chet Myers and the children and loved their mountain cabin. Hal preceded her in death in Nov., 1984.
The church and Leslie and Hal's relationship with God were paramount in their lives. Leslie impressed everyone who knew her with her positive outlook and her unfailing effort to live a Christ-like life. During her final years, she was overflowing with the fruit of the spirit which spilled over into the lives of all she touched.
Leslie is survived by one sister, Jacqueline (George) Kovaciny Parsons, Kan.; her daughter, Audrey L. Penner; and one grandson, John (Gretchen) Penner, now living in Chandler, Ariz.
Her parents and her husband Hal preceded her in death as well as three sisters, Lorraine (Raymond ) Norvel, Carol (DeVaughn) Riley and Mary Jane (Sam) Capehart.
Leslie led a full, productive life and will be missed by her grandson, John Penner; her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey Penner and Wayne Arihood and by her many students and friends.
Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church in Galena, Kan., at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan., under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

Irene D. Shafer
GALENA, Kan. - Irene D. Shafer, age 98, died at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at Galena Nursing Center, Galena, Kan., following an illness.
Born May 29, 1904 at Galena, she had lived here all of her life. Hervparents were the late John Henry and Lillie May (Tackett) Price.
Irene worked for 25 years for the Safeway Bakery, Joplin, retiring May 29, 1965. She was a member of the Galena Woman's Club.
She was married to Harry W. Shafer Dec. 24, 1951 at Eureka Springs, Ark. He died Aug. 4, 1984.
Aunt Irene, as she was affectionately called, is survived by nephews and nieces, Paul and Mildred Langford, Lexington, Ky., Bob and June Tremble, Joplin, Joe and Billie Tremble, LaPine, Ore., Joyce Tremble, Estes Park, Colo., and Helen Price, Galena.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Rev. Don Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home.
