We have tried to set or re-set our board so the newest postings will show at the top of the page instead of the bottom as it's been doing. We hoped it would make it easier for our readers to come back again and again. I'm thinking since the first post of the topic is the Topic heading, it has to stay in first place. Now I'm wondering, if the fact that I do not keep the same Subject for every post, might this account for the fact it doesn't seem to be working? So, I'm trying to find out by starting a new TOPIC to see if it will work the way we want it to. Marie GHS'57

The Newman Building - soon to become the new Joplin Municipal Building - was on the tax-sale list when it was compiled last month by Steve Holt, Jasper County collector. But the historic building was removed from the sale list July 30, when $161,911 in back taxes were paid, Holt said. The $46,007 owed in back taxes by Missouri Steel Castings will be paid prior to the sale date, according to Mike Pourney, the company's chairman. Taxes on the Newman Building represent the amount owed for 2001 and 2002. They were paid by the Chase Foundation after the city paid $3 million to purchase the building. "That came out of closing proceeds," said Brian Head, city attorney. "When they (the Chase Foundation) foreclosed on the building, they took it subject to the taxes incurred while the building ownership was in dispute." Hook Up Inc. bought the building in 1998 from Ozark Financial, a company owned by Gregory Fears and Martin Smith. Questions about the status of the building began being raised in 2001, and since then, Fears and Smith have pleaded guilty to charges including bank-loan and tax fraud, and securities violations. The building was reclaimed by the Chase Foundation on behalf of Glada Chase, an Arkansas widow who entrusted her life savings to Fears. A "difficult two years" had caused Missouri Steel Castings to fall behind on tax payments, Pourney said. The Joplin plant was purchased three years ago as part of St. Louis Steel Castings, with the operations of two other companies consolidated at the Joplin location. The company recently received approval for a $500,000 state loan as part of a $1 million financing plan to help the company buy equipment to expand production. "That will give us working capital so we can use regular operating funds to pay back taxes," Pourney said. Many of the properties on the list are residential, said Holt, the county collector. "A lot of it is residential property, and a lot of people have multiple numbers of properties on the list," he added. What is unusual this year, Holt said, is the large number of properties on the list. Normally, when his office prepares for the annual tax sale, the list contains about 500 properties on which at least two years of taxes are owed. By the time the sale is scheduled, owners have received "lots of delinquent notices," Holt said. In May, the office sends out certified letters telling owners that if they don't pay back taxes, the property will be included in the tax sale. "We got quite a lot of response from that, because we started with almost 1,000 properties," he said. More owners normally come in and reclaim properties as the date for the tax sale approaches. "But we're not getting as many calls this year," Holt said. An owner can redeem the property within two years of the sale. And a buyer who purchases a property for back taxes does not become of the official owner of the property for two years. Marie GHS'57

A1 & A11 The plaintiff, a diminutive Kansas City woman, turns 103 this month. The defendants are prominent heirs of a long-dead Tulsa, Okla., publisher whose newspaper no longer exists. And the race riot that links them? It happened 82 years ago, supposedly sparked by the Tulsa Tribune's overzealous reporting and, perhaps, its lust for a lynching. A federal lawsuit recently filed in Kansas City seeks to settle an old and disputed score stemming from what many scholars call the worst racial melee in U.S. history. Scores died at the hands of a white mob. But Rosella Carter survived to spend the rest of her years in Kansas City. Like many black seniors who count themselves among the dwindling number of survivors, she won't talk about the Tulsa riot to the press. Her attorneys say "Mama Carter" is happy to spend her evenings quietly cross-stitching in the apartment she has called home for a quarter-century. "We prayed" over whether to take legal action, said her Tulsa attorney, Jim Lloyd. "And then she said, `Let's go get them.' " That a crusade for racial justice could find its way up the wheelchair ramp of Carter's humble apartment speaks to the modern-day battle fronts of a riot that, for decades, Tulsans refrained from openly discussing. On one front stand O.J. Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran and Harvard Law School's Charles Ogletree. They lead a squad of civil-rights litigators who want government reparations paid to black survivors of the riot and to descendants of survivors. In February, the high-profile lawyers listed Carter among 128 riot survivors in a lawsuit filed in Oklahoma against the state and the city of Tulsa. That lawsuit is seen as a key test for a larger campaign to secure reparations for racial wrongs of the past, particularly slavery. They have three grown sons, Rick, Rob and Rusty.....and are the proud grandparents of Jennifer,Travis and Jess. Dennis was one of the Midwest's top collegiate track and field athletes and in 1948 placed sixth in the decathlon at the national tryouts for the Olympic Games. But acting was his chosen career and Dennis went to New York in search of opportunities. He was accepted into New York's famed Actors Studio and made his Broadway debut in OUT West of 8th, directed by Burgess Meredith. He went on to tour nationally with Shirley Booth and Sidney Blackmer in William Inge's prizewinning play, COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA. After several other appearances on the stage, including Tennessee Williams' THE GLASS MENAGERIE, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and ALL MY SONS, Dennis was signed by Universal International in 1952 and brought to Hollywood to pursue his career. Bob Holden vetoed a concealed weapons bill today, but the sponsor of the legislation remained confident it will become law. Holden signed the veto in suburban St. Louis -- an area of the state that played a big role in defeating 1999's Proposition B, a ballot measure that would have allowed Missourians to carry concealed guns. Seventy-eight percent of the voters in this community voted against it. "You and I clearly agree putting more guns in people's hands does not reduce crime," Holden said over catcalls from about one dozen pro-gun protesters. At one point they chanted, "One-term Bob!" while the governor spoke. Holden said he had several concerns about the bill, such as inadequate training requirements; no provision for a gun safety refresher course; and lack of an adequate database to make sure the mentally ill can't get weapons. He also said that under the proposal people convicted of misdemeanor domestic abuse would be allowed to carry weapons. Both the House and Senate supported a bill that would allow people 23 and older who have taken handgun training courses to apply to their county sheriffs for concealed gun permits. The bill also allows anyone 21 or older to conceal guns in the passenger compartment of a vehicle without a permit. Click here to continue... For what it's worth... here's my 2 cents! I don't want anyone carrying concealed weapons (Guns, and such) unless they are in a legitimate occupation that requires a gun. If indeed they pass a law allowing private citizens to carry weapons, I say they have to be in plain sight and can absolutely not be hidden. Their permit must also be in plain sight. This should be a better deterent than the possibility that some one may have a concealed gun that can be used against the bad person. If the guns are on law abiding citizens and can be seen, the bad persons will not do bad things. They will know the guns are there and refrain from committing crimes. They should strap their gun in a ?belt with a ?holder on it for their gun. Wait a minute... I believe that item has already been invented. In fact, the bad persons as well as the good persons used the same item to hold their guns. Then there is also the fact, that during those uncivilized years in our history, the bad persons didn't seem to care that the good persons also had guns... They robbed stagecoaches. They robbed trains. They robbed banks. They robbed payrolls. They robbed individuals. They robbed..... Would it have helped if the good person's guns had been hidden? I still don't want anyone carrying hidden guns. If indeed we must allow our citizens to carry weapons make them and their permits have to be in plain site. Human nature being what it is... a good person can do bad and a bad person can do good in or under certain circumstances. That way, I can avoid any person carrying a gun. That's my 2 cents. Third St., is set to debut what they consider to be their premier show of their 2003-2004 exhibit calendar. "Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics" opens today with a private reception for Spiva members. The exhibit will open to the public on Saturday and will run through Sept. 15. One of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso may be best known for his paintings, but his works also include sculptures, prints and ceramics. The Spiva exhibit, which has been loaned by the Edward and Ann Weston collection, will include plates, bowls, plaques, vases and pitchers created by Picasso. The 65 works were made in conjunction with George and Suzanne Ramie at their Madoura Pottery workshop in Vallauris, France, between 1947 and 1971. The exhibit also features posters from previous Picasso exhibits and photography of the artist at the Madoura workshop. The exhibit of the 65 works at Spiva was made possible by Friends of St. Avips. In conjunction with the Picasso exhibit, Spiva's regional gallery will feature ceramics by five local artists. The gallery will feature works by Brent Skinner, Diamond, Jed Schlegel, Joplin, John Schermbeck, Webb City, Gregory Krepps, Pittsburg, Kan., and Jim Reed, Arcadia, Kan. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The gallery is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted. The road is revealing history. An archaeological survey of the construction site discovered hundreds of arrow tips, pottery shards and other ancient American Indian artifacts dating back possibly a thousand years or more to the prehistoric Mississippian Period. Experts describe the find as important because it is one of the few excavated sites in western Missouri and one, they hope, will provide a better snapshot of the area's prehistoric people. Now, before road construction can proceed, the city of Liberty must plan how to excavate and catalog all the artifacts at the site. Liberty has hired Effigy Archaeological Services Inc. of Overland Park for that work. City engineer Mike Lawless said the survey, excavation and cataloging would cost the city about $30,390. The road project is estimated between $12 million and $15 million. The first phase of the road project includes constructing the parkway from Interstate 35 east to Withers Road, and extending Withers and Hughes roads. This is the first time Liberty has had to take extra measures to preserve a significant historical find, Lawless said. Tom Gannon, archaeologist and vice president of Effigy, said he has uncovered some 1,000 stone and ceramic artifacts so far, most from the Mississippian Period, which began about A.D. 900. Some items such as a jagged stone dart point that once attached to a spear, are older, going back to the Archaic Period that dates between 7000 B.C. and 500 B.C. "This is significant based on the fact that not too many of these sites have ever been examined in the area," Gannon said. In addition to the traditional walk-through exhibit of live butterflies, for the first time the event will include a display of butterfly art in the Visitor Education Center. All three of the featured artists have distinguished themselves in the field. John Cody of Hays, Kan., known as the "Audubon of moths," is a specialist in moth illustration and has published several books on the subject. William Howe of Ottawa, Kan., is the editor and illustrator of Butterflies of North America and is currently showing work at the Dallas Museum of Natural History. St. Louis-based Greg Edmondson, who recently concluded a show at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, will reprise his installation, "Natural Selection," of 33 hand-painted moth and butterfly images on patterned wallpaper. The exhibit will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily Aug. 15-24. Butterfly festival hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 15-17 and 22-24. Both weekends will feature an artist demonstration and display by well-known botanical illustrator Beth Phillip. Howe, Edmondson and Phillip will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to sign books and catalogs, available at the exhibit. John Charles Martin Nash showed up Friday night at Souls Harbor, a homeless shelter on Joplin's Main Street. He registered there but left after staying just 90 minutes or so. John Fetters, a weekend desk clerk and maintenance worker at Souls Harbor, said he remembers registering Nash. "He was very quiet," Fetters said. "He was traveling on the bus, and he needed a place to stay. He was just traveling through. He had to wait until Saturday for the next bus." After registering, Fetters said, "(Nash) went to lie down and rest, and about 11 p.m. he decided not to stay. He just walked down the street. He wandered around the building. He seemed like he wasn't all there." Fetters described Nash as "a very nervous person." Fetters said he did not know where Nash spent Friday night. Joplin police were called Saturday afternoon to Dioko Coffee Co., at 514 S. Main St., regarding a complaint about a "suspicious person" who had fallen asleep on a sofa. A police dispatch report indicated a man named John C.M. Nash from New Jersey was asked to leave. "(He) did not appear to be all there mentally," the police dispatch log says. "(He) was told to leave and he did so. They will call if he returns." An employee at Dioko Coffee Co. said management did not want to discuss the incident. Sylvia Nasar's book "A Beautiful Mind," on which the movie was based, says John Charles Martin Nash was born May 20, 1959, to Alicia and John F. Nash. John F. Nash won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994 for his Games Theory. The movie, based on his life and struggle with mental illness, won the Oscar for best picture in 2001. John Charles Martin Nash was diagnosed with schizophrenia and has shown signs of brilliance like his father, Nasar wrote in the book. The younger Nash has neither a high school diploma nor a college degree, but in 1981 he received a full scholarship and was accepted to a doctoral program in math at Rutgers University, in New Jersey. He received his doctorate in 1985. He is known to travel the country by Greyhound bus. Alicia Nash said that her son was on a bus trip and that he had been to Las Vegas. A phone number Nash gave Souls Harbor matched that of Alicia Nash. "He's on his way back home right now," she said when contacted by telephone at her home in New Jersey. Genevieve County for 100 years. At a closed-door session Tuesday, the Missouri Land Reclamation Commission voted unanimously to approve a surface-mining permit for the plant proposed by Holcim Inc. The company would mine limestone on about 1,600 acres of land next to the plant site, located about 45 miles south of St. Louis. The operation would lead eventually to creation of a large quarry. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wednesday that the commissioners had no public discussion about the permit, which has generated hundreds of letters and comments. Missouri's open-meetings law requires that all meetings of public bodies be open, though exceptions can be made under certain circumstances. Amy Randles, the commission's lawyer, said the decision to close the meeting was warranted because the commission was considering a draft order. "My reading of the Sunshine Law is that when there are deliberations on contested cases like this, it's a proper subject for a closed session," Randles told the Post-Dispatch. After deliberating in closed session, the commissioners reopened the meeting. Chairman Ted Smith of Springfield announced the commission would vote on whether to adopt the order it had discussed in closed session, and the permit was approved 6-0. In its order, the commission said, "Holcim introduced significant scientific evidence on the record from qualified and credible experts supporting a conclusion that no interested person's health, safety or livelihood would be unduly impaired by issuance of the proposed permit." Last week four environmental groups filed a lawsuit in federal court in St. Louis against Holcim and the Army Corps of Engineers. The lawsuit claims the corps should have prepared an environmental impact statement before issuing a wetlands-destruction permit to the company's U.S. division last month. Holcim officials have said the $600 million plant would provide about 200 permanent jobs. They say that land damaged by the limestone quarry would be reclaimed to support vegetation and wildlife. Holcim spokeswoman Nancy Tully told KWMU radio in St. Louis that the company will mine no more than 200 acres at a time. She says the company will restore the 1,300 acres of land it wants to quarry. The commission's vote was a step forward for Holcim, but the plant still faces permit approval by the Air Conservation Commission. Environmentalists have said winds will carry pollution created by the plant over the St. Louis area, endangering the region's ability to comply with federal clean air standards. Marie GHS'57

My husband bought it, which means I can throw it away before the numbers are even picked. He has a perfect record. He's been buying tickets since 1985 and has never chosen a correct number. Now what are the odds of that? Yet he remains an optimist. "Darn. It's only $23.1 million," he said not long ago as he waved one of his bum tickets. "Tell me, do you want to take the jackpot in a single lump sum or 30 annual payments?" I continued slogging away at a stubborn patch of dried chicken crust on the skillet. "Surprise me," I told him. "What would you do with $23.1 million?" he persisted. I told him I'd buy a clean skillet. And I wouldn't think twice about cruising through Charlie's Chicken. My sister, Winnie, has tried to teach him the art of selecting good lottery numbers, but he wants no part of it, probably because he can't remember my age, my birthday or our anniversary. So he plucks any old numbers from the air or allows a heartless machine to decide our future. That's like pulling ingredients at random from the kitchen cabinet, throwing them into a mixing bowl and calling it supper. (My son just read that and pointed out that that's exactly how I cook. To clear the record, I've only randomly tossed a couple of times and, so what, if you drown it in ranch dressing - it's edible.) Winnie, on the other hand, uses common sense and strategy in selecting her lottery numbers. She plays the same numbers - birthdays of various kin - each week Although she hasn't struck it big, she often pockets $20 or so. One of my friends has another prize-winning strategy. She plays her various body measurements for her numbers - bust, waist, hips, thigh, upper arm. When her jeans get tight, though, she has to change her numbers. Some lottery winners dream their lucky numbers or play the numbers on their fortune cookies or assign numbers to letters of the alphabet and spell out lucky words. My husband sniffs at such strategy. "So where would you want to live if we win this $23.1 million?" the optimist asked. "In a house with a clean skillet," I told him. I'm not packing yet, though. The next minute, it is chugging up the side of red rock cliffs into the Southwest, connecting the great landscape of America. Sure, the landscape is constructed from foam and plywood and the coal car will fit in the palm of your hand. And, yes, the power plant is a cardboard construction with idle smokestacks. But, to the enthusiasts who make it run, it might as well be real. "If it wasn't for the railroads, America wouldn't be what it is today," says Terry Lynch, one of the builders of the new Train Town center at Blue Ridge mall in eastern Kansas City. "Railroads brought farm products from the west to the east and people from the east to the west. It built this country." Lynch, a former history teacher, is the author of two books on railroad history and a long-time model train hobbyist. Like many train fans, he used to run his trains on isolated basement and garage set-ups with limited space and little exposure. Not anymore. Four area model train clubs have combined forces to operate Train Town, a 12,000-square-foot display of track, train and landscape, designed and constructed by hobbyists. But Peach Nehi is hard to find, especially outside of the South and Midwest, where the Nehi brand is approaching its 80th birthday. Peach Nehi bound for Scott's store is bottled at a family-owned soft drink plant in Paragould, Ark., where bottler Herb Bland enjoys catching whiffs of the product: "I open it and I can just smell the peach fuzz." By the late 1920s, there were more than 400 plants bottling Nehi products. The Nehi name reportedly was inspired by a salesman's comments about "knee-high" bottles. A popular co-owned product was Royal Crown Cola, which endures today. Fruit flavors were cornerstones of the label, including orange, grape and peach; Grape Nehi was the favorite beverage of Radar O'Reilly, the Iowa-raised company clerk on MASH. Today, Nehi's brands are owned by Plano, Texas-based Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., which is a division of London-based Cadbury Schweppes plc. In steamy Missouri summertime, it still is. Missouri's Iconium is a crossroads in the dense timber country near Truman Lake, just a short, sweaty hike from the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. Here a sweet and simple ritual has endured for about 30 years, comforting homesick boys and reassuring the older and more jaded that innocent pleasure still exists in a stressful, complicated, uncertain world. Dusk brings Scouts by the score to Scott's Iconium Store. They line up at the snack bar window to earn a whimsical merit badge - for the Peach Float Trip. The earthquake hit at 12:09 a.m. and was centered about 10 miles northeast of West Plains at a depth of about 3.1 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. "It shook some houses, but no damage was done," said Howell County deputy dispatcher Paul O'Brien. The quake was in the New Madrid Fault zone, which runs across parts of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois and Arkansas. The zone experiences more than 200 small earthquakes annually. The annual Family Night at the Fox, a fund-raiser for Main Street Joplin, filled the seats of the opulent theater for the classic "Singing in the Rain," starring Gene Kelly. Ashley Lampe Cupp, a member of the promotions committee for Main Street Joplin, said she was one of those lifetime Joplin residents who never knew the opulent theater existed until two weeks ago. "David (McCulley, director of Main Street Joplin) brought me here to help set up and I was amazed," Cupp said. "I was born and raised here and I never knew that something so spectacular and so unique was in our downtown." Gary Shaw, Joplin City Council member and member of the Central Christian Center, said church members know what a jewel they have and don't mind opening their doors to the community. "The building is on the National Registry of Historic Places and even though it is a church, we know it's up to us to open it up to the public a couple of times a year," Shaw said. The moviegoers filed into the theater and took in the vaulted lobby and read old copies of the Joplin Globe in showcases near the entrance. Sitting in the shade just outside her front door, the Joplin woman said she came into the world in this home and, if things go her way, she will leave it from there, too. "I have roots here deeper than the plants in my yard," she said But it has been difficult to stay. When her son began school in 2000, the Joplin School District collected $16,299,653, through its basic property tax for operations, from property owners like Richardson to pay for the education of her son and 6,837 of his peers. Missouri law says the amount should change only at the rate of inflation from year to year unless the people vote for higher taxes. The next year, 2001-02, the Joplin district collected $18,875,131, or 15.8 percent more, from property owners. Those figures represent revenue from the school district's operating levy of $2.75 per $100 assessed valuation. They do not include additional property taxes generated by the debt-service levy, which is used to pay off bonds approved by voters for construction projects. A constitutional amendment Missouri voters passed 23 years ago was intended to prevent property owners like Richardson from facing higher taxes without a vote. The Hancock Amendment requires school districts and other governmental entities to "roll back," or reduce, rates set for property taxes for general operations if they raise substantially more money from one year to the next. It hasn't worked that way. A Joplin Globe examination of the amount collected from property taxes - excluding debt-service levies for items such as new buildings - since 1997-98 for 13 Southwest Missouri school districts reveals an average yearly increase of 8.5 percent. He and his wife, Margene, weren't the only ones enjoying the once-a-year chance to strut their stuff on the dance floor. Thousands of polka dancers and general enthusiasts of German culture donned lederhosen, traditional German dresses and alpine hats in celebration of all things German for the 30th annual festival. The festival is held every year in Freistatt. Ernte Fest means "harvest festival" and was started in 1973 by the many residents of German ancestry in the Freistatt area. Each year, the Freistatt Lions Club hosts the event to help remind people of their German heritage and to raise funds for various organizations the club supports. German beer, bratwurst and sauerkraut were readily available at the festival as the main way of raising funds. Deborah Schoen, public relations director for the event, said the Lions Club sold 765 meals Friday night, 165 more than last year. Normally, the organization sells more than 1,000 meals and gets quite a bit of its money from the beer garden. "We had a lot of people," Schoen said. Carl Junction could more than double its sales-tax revenue and possibly eliminate its property taxes if it consolidated with the neighboring village of Airport Drive, said Joe Barfield, the Carl Junction city administrator. But Mark Rains, chairman of the village's Board of Trustees, said his community is not interested. Earlier this month, a Carl Junction citizens' group asked the City Council to consider approaching Airport Drive about a consolidation. The city's administrators have been considering the idea for months. Barfield gave the Globe a comparison of the two towns' utility rates and fees prepared by Steve Lawver, the city's economic development director. Barfield said he wants to talk about the issue with village trustees. The two towns' elected leaders fall on different sides of the issue. "I think we can offer more together than apart," said Carl Junction Mayor Jim Wisdom. Rains disagrees. "As far as I know, the village can survive on its own," he said. After the sampling, some floss was in order. "I think I still have its legs in my teeth," she said. Exuding equal parts brave enthusiasm and unadulterated gut-checking, 11-year-old Nick Hill thought hard, then stuffed the 11/2-inch batter-fried mealworm into his mouth. Egged on by an only slightly sadistic crowd, the other taste-testers at Saturday's bug buffet at Science City downed theirs. The freckled boy, of Clinton, Mo., managed half before hopping off stage, worm in hand. "At first it tasted like a french fry," Nick said. "But it had a seafood aftertaste. ... Maybe I'd eat it again if I had some Tabasco sauce." Did he want to eat the rest? No. Strangely enough, neither did his dad. Bug chef David George Gordon dished up insects at three shows Saturday at Science City in Union Station. Bold volunteers helped Gordon cook "Superworm Tempura," "Orthopteran Orzo" and "Sheesh-kabobs!" at his 12:30 p.m. show, where Nick bravely sampled the menu. Gordon, a science writer by trade, started eating insects eight years ago after he wrote a book about cockroaches. The bat has had some kind of life. It homered in Toronto. It went four for four in Detroit. It was booed in New York. The bat finally cracked in Milwaukee, where many have cracked, and like most broken ballplayers, it spent early retirement at a restaurant in California. That's when life changed. The bat went to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Pine Tar Bat has been all over America. It was featured at the Field Museum in Chicago and the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. Soon it will go to St. Petersburg, Fla., and get some sun, and then to Washington, where it may meet another president. There is talk of the bat going to Europe sometime. Was it a good bat? Not really. The bat played only 17 games. It hit only .273. It hit only two home runs, one off someone named Dave Geisel. You may have heard something about the other one. Today marks the 20th anniversary of the strangest 10-minute game in baseball history. It happened in New York. It had to happen in New York. And no matter what happens when the Royals play at Yankee Stadium tonight, it won't be as crazy as it was that day in 1983 when an umpire pulled out a notarized statement from other umpires, when kids sued their own team, when George Brett ate lobster in Newark and when the Pine Tar Bat was wrapped in sanitary hose and shoved in a garbage bag so that the countless reporters would just leave it alone. III You know the story. On July 24, 1983, Brett hit a two-run, two-out home run in the ninth off New York's Goose Gossage. The pitch was thrown head-high at about 372 mph, and Brett mashed it to right field, and he went to the dugout feeling pretty good about himself. He was laughing when Yankees manager Billy Martin came out to say the bat was illegal. The rule was that you could not have pine tar applied more than 18 inches from the end of the bat. It was a rule from ancient times, something to prevent baseballs from getting all tarred up. Graig Nettles, Brett's archenemy, was the first one to notice that Brett's bat had too much pine tar. And Martin waited for the right moment. Umpire Tim McClelland ruled that the bat did have too much pine tar, and he disallowed the home run and called Brett out.
